DOOM 3: BFG Edition

DOOM 3: BFG Edition

Statistieken weergeven:
How well does Doom 1 & 2 work on modern computers?
How well does the BFG edition of Doom 1 & 2 run on modern machines?

And how does it handle high resolution settings? (Wide screen for example.)

Is there any difference between the versions of Doom 1 & 2 found in the BFG Edition and the ones in the 'Doom Classic Complete' pack?

There is no diferance between the BFG edition of doom 1&2 then the doom classic complete.

The resolution doe doom 1&2 was (and is) a fixed 640x480. it will play, but it doesnt properly fit widescreen (This was a DOS/win 3.1 era game and hasnt been "updated") It will either streach to your screen, or put black bars on the side, depending on your system config.

Hypotheticly your system should be able to run it fine, smart phones have more power today then the PC systems doom was designed to run on.

As an added point, doom 1 and 2 have been converted to the doom 3 engine by modders, but you need the original doom 3, not the bfg edition to run them, apparently from what i have read, the bfg edition does not have mod support.
my bad, i guess there are some changes, I had read they were the same.
here is more detailed info on the changes:

SpellSword, if you want widscreen and higher resolution for Doom and Doom 2, not even BFG won't give it to you. But there are lots of options around: modern engines that can run the Doom wads (Doom content files) I personaly use Zdoom, may not be the best, don't know, there are many others and many online active communities for each one.
@Imp:
Thanks for the link Imp that site had exactly the information I was looking for. I'll have to keep an eye out for those doom 1 & 2 mods.

@Effexor:
It's good to know Zdoom works with the BFG edition wad files. I was hoping they'd run in widescreen without using 3rd-party software though.

However, the fact that Doom 1 & 2 are still able to be enjoyed on a modern machine is excellent in itself!

Thank you both. ^_^
Doom 1 and 2 run fine on Vista,but i had to keep it on sidebar resolution

Here is a steam group for the mod that converted doom 1&2 to the doom 3 engine, it also ads some other stuff, like co-op to the doom3 SP campaign:

Like I said thou, the mod only works with the standard doom3, not the BFG edition

Would you say that mod is the best way to play Doom 1-3? Thinking about getting those now instead of BFG.
Personaly? Yes, to me it is better, especialy if you like co-op. BFG doesnt even support mods.

Plus the doom1&2 conversions are full 3D, while not quite the same as playing the original since you have full 3d movment/aiming, it still is very good. plus its cheaper and you still get the original doom1&2 if you get the non-BFG combo

google search "multiplayer doom" or "doom source ports" for great programs to run doom at high resolutions and with optional advanced features on modern PCs.

If you want to retain a purely classic feel then check out "chocolate doom".
