As for Doom 3, I'm inclined to agree. But, unfortunately, the BFG Edition was released with consoles in mind, and as such, uses the console system for it's online component. And I think we'll see some mod support in the near future, now that the source code is available for people to tinker with.
So why did you buy it and not just play Doom 3's multiplayer?
Doom, Doom 2 and 3, are developed and released. Doom 3 was out in '06, if somone is runnning a server for multiplayer then great, why not run one for you and your friends. Since Doom 3's release id software hosts Quake Live, for non stop action multiplayer.
You mentioned upgrading the doom engine to ZDoom. That would take away the very vanilla feel that made the game what it is. Personally I hate how ZDoom feels (mouse code, sluggish, slippery movement). What would be cool to see if information about source ports such as ZDaemon[www.zdaemon.org] and Zandronum[www.zandronum.com] (as you mentioned, as well as play). They offer great online multiplayer experiences and you can run so many IWADs on your own servers or in single player.
Doom 3 BFG may have been designed for consoles, buy Caramack explained how he was angry over their mistakes with Rage and PC support, and wouldn't make the same mistakes in future games. Of course, Rage was just graphics card support. but he implied that any big issues with PC versions wouldn't be there.
@WyrM
Doom 3 BFG's multiplayer completely sucks. Over the time that I have owned it, since release date btw, I've only been able to get onto 2 matches. And they both sucked. Did a little googling, everyone had the same issues I did.
@Doom Jesus
It is nice to fantasize, care to join me?
@Evolution
Throw in a toggle for vannila settings, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love toggle. No really, a reset to defaults mode would of fixed that, Doom source ports are not hard to make xD
I'm not sure why you think I enjoyed it, I played it for the first 3 months of release in '06 myself and the ctf/dm was not fun. Nor were there many servers to pick from.
You would have to read Mrs. Nesbitt's comment to understand mine it seems. And to your original comment, to reiterate Doom 3, 2, and 1, are devolped and released. Either love them for what they are or don't however re-developing the game is unlikely to happen.
For Doom 3 mods and
Doom 1/2 Mods
also the WAD support because many of us own Master lvls of Doom and FINAL DOOM that look like ♥♥♥♥ on steam but awesome on DOOM 3 BFG...
Yes hosting the game with a zero ping can give you a slight edge, but i have seen many good players win several matches in a row with similar ping to everyone else 200 - 300+. I have even won matches against good players with a 999 ping & severe lag.
You can also easily lose a game with a zero ping. The lag makes it more interesting & challenging as you have to try harder & adjust your playing to suit.
Enjoy the game as it is & just play better!
