Things that need to happen that will make Doom 3 BFG Edition worth what we spent on it.
Hindsight, what we payed for it definetely covers the cost for every game in that bundle. 7 games in one set is freaking awesome. But what they suported was mediocre. So, I've compiled a list of things that should happen within the next set of patches to make this worth our money.

1) Multiple IWAD support
- For those of you who don't know, IWADs are the file types that Doom, and Doom 2 are. They basically hold the core functions that isn't the doom engine itself. IE the main monsters, level sets, and graphics. I would love to plug in my copy of Heretic and play that. Final Doom would be nice too. (I can simply rename the Iwads, but the game crashes when I try to exit)

2) Vannila Iwads
- I want to be able to play Map31 and kill some nazi scum. I want to type into my keyboard: idclev31 and go and do that. When I'm there, I would type in iddqd and idkfa, and kick some Nazi ♥♥♥, I already killed enough zombies.

3) Custom Wad and PK3 support.
- If you're like me, Doom wasn't enough. Doom 2 still wasn't enough, and neither was Final Doom. If you're like me, you have a copy of Sky May Be, and Deus Vult II. Because 130 levels wasn't enough for you. Custom Pwads is one of the key features that made Doom so successful, is that the fun didn't have to stop after 130 levels.

4) Multiplayer Support for Classic Doom/Doom 2, and Co-op for Doom 3
- I think this is self explanitory, who here was hoping to have some classic deathmatch with a far larger community? I went back to using Zandorum when I saw non-multiplayer for that. I even dug up my old copy of Doom 3 just to play co-op.

5) Upgrade the Doom engine into something more like Zdoom.
- I'm talking to you id Software. If you want people to play Doom like a modern FPS, you give them tools and features like a modern FPS would be. Zdoom is by far, BY FAR, the best Doom engine out there.

6) Dedicated servers for Doom 3
- This is what happens...
- Find Match
- Looking for server
- 99/100 times it will make you the host
- if you happen to not be the host:
- Host ping 0
- your ping, along with everyone else's: 200 - 400
- C'mon id, you guys are smarter than this.

7) Mod support for Doom 3.
- I don't know about you guys, but I want to put sikk mod on this so I can play thee lost missions without lag. Doom 3 and RoE run just fine, but Lost Missions lagged with a few Imps on screen. And I bet a lot of people would just love to fix the flashlight and other things.

This is Doom THREE BFG Edition. The Doom/Doom 2 games are extras. They are pretty much in their original state, save for a few changes. They were not the focus for developers on this project. Why would they make the engine more like one of the source ports? Have they said they want people to play it like a modern shooter? I don't recall that, in fact, I think the opposite. They want people to play the classic games as they were intended, but without the hassle of DosBox or source ports to get them to work. Straight, out-of-the-box functionality. Custom WAD support would have been nice, though, seeing as it was one of the great things about the original games at release. Massive engine upgrades would completely change the game, however, when there's really no need. It's not a remake, it's a re-release, and to make the kind of changes you're talking about would be an admission that the original games aren't good enough, even though they clearly are. I'm biased on this, of course, simply because I prefer the games in their original state, minus any source ports.

As for Doom 3, I'm inclined to agree. But, unfortunately, the BFG Edition was released with consoles in mind, and as such, uses the console system for it's online component. And I think we'll see some mod support in the near future, now that the source code is available for people to tinker with.

i want dedicated servers! and coop!
Rockhead Gaz Dec 23, 2012 @ 3:40pm
I agree with dedicated servers and coop too. The original xbox version had coop, no reason why the new release shouldn't. And i'm not disagreeing with the OP either, added support for custom wads etc., would be great. Having said that, i still think its a nice little package for the price. Hopefully id will continue to improve it with future updates.

I agree 100 percent with everything you've suggested. In its current state, multiplayer is unplayable. I bought this game almost solely for the multiplayer, because I already owned Doom 1, 2, and 3, and Doom 3's muliplayer servers are either incredibly laggy or empty. Don't get me wrong, singleplayer is much more important than multiplayer. Even though it still has issues, the singleplayer is playable; the multiplayer is not. As for you, Rockhead Gaz, I understand you're point about keeping the classic Doom feel. While I do agree with OP, if id wanted to retain the classic feel they could at least enable autosave, always run, and custom resolutions for the classic Doom games. These improvements would not change the gameplay at all. All they would do would make things much easier for the player. Personally, I can't stand having to hold the shift key the entire game. I assume many other people would agree.

So why did you buy it and not just play Doom 3's multiplayer?

Doom, Doom 2 and 3, are developed and released. Doom 3 was out in '06, if somone is runnning a server for multiplayer then great, why not run one for you and your friends. Since Doom 3's release id software hosts Quake Live, for non stop action multiplayer.

Doom 3's multiplayer is pretty much unplayable. All of the servers are either empty or 200+ ping for me. I do play Quake Live, I just really wanted to play Doom 3's multiplayer. Doom 3 BFG's multiplayer is also unplayable because of the lack of dedicated servers. It's basically a big game of the host always wins.

fantasizing is fun...

Hi there.

You mentioned upgrading the doom engine to ZDoom. That would take away the very vanilla feel that made the game what it is. Personally I hate how ZDoom feels (mouse code, sluggish, slippery movement). What would be cool to see if information about source ports such as ZDaemon[www.zdaemon.org] and Zandronum[www.zandronum.com] (as you mentioned, as well as play). They offer great online multiplayer experiences and you can run so many IWADs on your own servers or in single player.

@gaz If they really wanted a calssic expirience, they would of botched the mouse and made it work like the 95 engine. That's going classic. Up/down arrowkeys to move forward and backward, left/right to turn. Control to shoot.Holding alt to strafe. Numbers at top of keyboard to change weapons. Space to use swiches and open doors, etc.

Doom 3 BFG may have been designed for consoles, buy Caramack explained how he was angry over their mistakes with Rage and PC support, and wouldn't make the same mistakes in future games. Of course, Rage was just graphics card support. but he implied that any big issues with PC versions wouldn't be there.

@WyrM
Doom 3 BFG's multiplayer completely sucks. Over the time that I have owned it, since release date btw, I've only been able to get onto 2 matches. And they both sucked. Did a little googling, everyone had the same issues I did.

@Doom Jesus
It is nice to fantasize, care to join me?

@Evolution
Throw in a toggle for vannila settings, ♥♥♥♥♥es love toggle. No really, a reset to defaults mode would of fixed that, Doom source ports are not hard to make xD

I'm not sure why you think I enjoyed it, I played it for the first 3 months of release in '06 myself and the ctf/dm was not fun. Nor were there many servers to pick from.

You would have to read Mrs. Nesbitt's comment to understand mine it seems. And to your original comment, to reiterate Doom 3, 2, and 1, are devolped and released. Either love them for what they are or don't however re-developing the game is unlikely to happen.

Game released in August of '04. It was so badass at the time except they screwed the pooch and only gave us I believe 2v2 or some crap like that. The expansion finally bumped it up to 4v4 I think. Either way, they gimped the MP at the time, which as a damn shame because it was so much fun back then.

I just want an option to use the flashlight like the Original Doom 3. The combat mounted light makes the game a lot easier and A LOT less scarier. Or maybe the fact that I've beaten this game 100 times already makes it like that for me. Mods would be awesome as would dedicated servers.

@Mrs. Nesbitt - You are like alot of people, lose a match & find all the reasons why you lost the match besides the real one - the other players were better that day!

Yes hosting the game with a zero ping can give you a slight edge, but i have seen many good players win several matches in a row with similar ping to everyone else 200 - 300+. I have even won matches against good players with a 999 ping & severe lag.

You can also easily lose a game with a zero ping. The lag makes it more interesting & challenging as you have to try harder & adjust your playing to suit.

Enjoy the game as it is & just play better!

There have been multiple times when I have won games with 300+ ping, but that is not my point. When hitscan weapons are taking up to three seconds to register, then yes, we have a serious problem on our hands. One doesn't have a lack of skill when he or she cannot hit a target that is teleporting around them. I'm not looking for excuses (I can still do fairly well in a match, probably because my opponants aren't the best, not like they'd have room to increase their skill with such intense connection issues), but there is no doubt in my mind that a person with zero ping has a little bit more than a "slight" advantage over someone with 300 or more ping.
