Doom 3 BFG Edition hangs on loading screen
Had the game for a while, but recently an issue has cropped up that's preventing me from playing it. Whenever I try to continue the game or start a new one, the game hangs on the first loading screen and refuses to load the level. There is no error screen, no crash, and the game refuses to do anything but track my mouse pointer unless I press the ESC key, at which point it just closes the game.
I'm running Vista 64 (latest service pack), with a Radeon 6950, Phenom II 945, 8 gigs of DDR2 800 RAM, a 780g chipset, a Seasonic S12II 520 watt and a Western Digital Caviar Black 1T hard drive. I have the latest drivers for my VGA.
I've tried reinstalling DirectX, forcing window mode, closing Afterburner, and changing the game's settings. I even deleted my save files because I thought they might be corrupted, and reinstalled the game twice. It's aggravating, to say the least. I would try tweaking OpenGL settings, but Catalyst Control Center only allows me to alter the Triple Buffering setting (which is off). Everything else is set at default and is linked to my Direct X settings.

hmm did you upgrade your GFX Drivers recently like i did?

Yesterday i played 5 hours in a row, upgraded my Drivers before but didn't do a restart.
Today i got the same crash at the loading screen.
It doesn't even give me an error in windowed mode.

Edit:

Thats weird....tried for fun starting multiplay...worked...now one step further i tried SP again and it worked again...just weird.

Apparently it's a driver issue, in this case a corrupted driver. Uninstalling the driver completely and reinstalling it completely fixed the problem.
I feel silly, as I ran through a bunch of troubleshooting before turning to Bethesda support two weeks ago, but I didn't do this bit. It should've been one of the first things I did!

Same for me, apparently it is not a corrupted driver. I formated my PC because of that issue and got it again on a fresh system install. I think it is related to version 13.4 that broke it.

Having to load multiplayer before playing single player is very annoying.

It's a driver issue. I had to reinstall CCC and the crossfire drivers to get it to work.

Same issue for me on my 7990. Reinstalling the 13.4 CCC did not work, and that's after using Driver Sweeper as well. Every few times I can start the game using an older save file, but for now the multiplayer workaround works.
