Windowed mode insanity
So when starting up Doom 3 i kept getting the OpenGL error. I forced the game to open up in windowed mode. So now the game runs in windowed. Unfortunately now thats all it does. Any attempt to make it fullscreen will immediatley crash the game, no error message or anything. So how do i make this fullscreen? Was psyched to play Doom again but now i just feel cheated out of my money for a broken product

If you couldn't run it in fullscreen to begin with, what makes you thing you can now?
ReNICKulous Jan 5 @ 1:10pm
Thats why I'm here? Somethings wrong with the game, not my computer.
motorsep Jan 5 @ 1:38pm
no, something wrong with your video driver / GPU.

What GPU do you have?
ReNICKulous Jan 5 @ 1:53pm
Nvidia Geforce GTX 550 TI

All drivers are up to date
motorsep Jan 5 @ 2:04pm
Well, someone here said his drivers were up to date, but the year was 2009. So obviously it wasn't up to date.

I have 670 GTX and these are my settings:

AO - off
AF - 4x
AA FXAA off
AA Gamma Correction - On
AA Mode - Off
CUDA - All
Max pre-rendered frames - Use 3D app settings
Multi-display - Single
Power management - Adaptive
Tex Filtering Anisotropic Sample optimization - On
Tex filtering Negative LOD bias - Clamp
Tex filtering Quality - Quality
Tex filtering Trilinear - On
Threaded optimization - Auto
Tripple Buffering - On
V-Sync - Use 3D app settings

My driver is 320.49 (probably a bit dated).

Everything works just fine.

Also make sure you are running as Admin when updating drivers, and make sure drivers are updated properly.
ReNICKulous Jan 5 @ 2:25pm
Yeah i check my drivers weekly, hate being out of date. The game works fine in windowed and i had regular Doom 3 before this and it worked completely fine, fullscreen and great graphics. Just doesn't make sense
motorsep Jan 5 @ 3:12pm
Eeh, regular Doom 3 has old idtech 4 engine, from 2004. Doom 3 BFG has entirely new rendering system, from 2012. Two different engines when it comes to rendering.

Have you tried the settings I posted? Try rebooting maybe?

How much VRAM do you have?

Hopefully this will help, just posted some dxdiag

I ran a program that tests if your pc can run a game, mine said i could run Doom 3 BFG with a great score or something. Its just frustrating after youve tried 30 fixes and none of them work

Doesn't really help determining what's the deal :/ I've heard about a few cases of 5xx TI owners having issues with OpenGL games in fullscreen.

You should try GPL build, maybe it will help determining the issue (of course that implies compiling and debugging).

I am using Doom 3 BFG engine for my upcoming game, so all these crash issues are interesting to me :)
ReNICKulous Jan 5 @ 3:36pm
I have RAGE also and even though it took a bit of fine tuning it works just fine now. You think they do refunds?
motorsep Jan 5 @ 3:38pm
Ohh, you see this:

r_fullscreen reset from 4 to 1 because mode list failed.Initializing OpenGL subsystem with

r_fullscreen can only be 0 or 1

dmPelsWidth : 1804 dmPelsHeight : 1014

That resolution isn't supported by the game. Switch your desktop resolution to something standard, like 1280x720 or 1920x1080 (depends on what aspect ratio your monitor is).

Here is one thing you can do, if you desktop resolution is standard. Go into C:\Users\you\Saved Games\id Software\Doom 3 BFG\base\ and delete .cfg file

the fullscreen to 4 thing was just a fix i saw, ill try changing my desktops resolution and get back to you
motorsep Jan 5 @ 3:48pm
Yeah, you will find quite a few nonsense recommendations here in the forums. r_fullscreen 1 is fullscreen, r_fullscreen 0 is windowed mode.
ReNICKulous Jan 5 @ 3:57pm
Dude you're a lifesaver. It's strange running my tv on a 1360x768 resolution but i might just keep it that way, at least games will run. Thanks bro!
