DOOM 3: BFG Edition

DOOM 3: BFG Edition

Buy normal DOOM 3 + Expansion and D1 & D2 separately instead!
If you are looking into buying this version, don't. The original games are, with just an .ini tweak (and optional graphics mods that look wayyyyyyy greater), better than this.

I bought this version before I got D3 + Expansion with D1 & D2. At first, I thought I wasn't missing out on much. But then I wonder why this version is so freakin' bright compared to the original. The original's darkness was actually a plus, it gave the game a better atmosphere.

The flashlight being attached to your shoulder in this version is actually more annoying than not. You see this huge white circular ray of light coming from the left of your screen. Not only is it disorienting, it also, like the extra brightness, kills the atmosphere of the game.

They made the game really easy with all the extra ammo pickups. I had full ammo on EVERYTHING before I went to that-other-place (Trying not to reveal spoilers!) halfway through the game. There is no element of ammo management whats so ever.

THEY CENSORED DOOM 2. They removed the Nazi references in DOOM 2 and censored the Wolfenstein easter egg. Why was this needed? The games separately on Steam still have the references.

Lack of graphics options. Literally the only options are Motion Blur, FOV, Max FPS, AA and AF. The rest of the textures are on Ultra settings. Now, this is not a problem for me, but for people with bad computers, this is a huge downfall, so take this part as for what it is.

DOOM 3 with just a couple of mods and an .ini tweak for HD resolution looks WAY better than this version of the game. If you have a moderate to high end gaming PC, the game looks like a next-gen game (other than some of the animations and modeling). Compare this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc4ZRMP9QyY ---- to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67TbmU9bAwI ---- and like I said in the previous paragraph, if you have a bad PC, then you can run at lower settings unlike the BFG edition.

So overall, this point has been discussed many of times, but I felt like I needed to post this because of the sale. In a nutshell, this isn't worth it compared to just buying the games separately. The only real reasons to get this is for achievements and Lost Mission, but the Lost Mission is really short and isn't very polished.

I agree. People are better off buying original Doom 3 and installing Sikkmod with Wulfen texture pack. Which is what BFG edition should have been and looked. Even now, with those mods, Doom 3 looks better than most modern FPSes out there on the market. So yeah for everyone still on the fence about buying BFG, buy vanilla, get mods(with Reznor sound pack) and play Doom 3 that way. You won't regret it.

Ooo, I'm going to have to check out Reznor soundpack.
WIsh I'd seen this earlier. Oh well. Good looking out for future buyers, though!

Yeah, I was trying to keep this bumped up but it got buried to the second or third page because of all these threads about OpenGL errors lol.

One issue. Original doesn't have no rest for the living, and is missing the lost mission. So, you're missing gameplay by not going with BFG. But, at the same time you're missing nostalgia.

To me, going with normal D3 is better because I'd rather not sacrifice great graphics mods (well, mods in general like Hexen: Edge of Chaos) and a better atmosphere than an unpolished 8 level mission and a .wad I could just download off the internet.

Also, buying the games separately only costs a couple cents more, and when they are off sale, costs a couple cents less.

I have the classic modables, and bfg. You can get both.

Well yeah, I'm not dissing the BFG (well actually I might be but I don't intend to). I also have all versions. I'm just saying that other than achieves and Lost Mission, you may as well just get normal DooM 3 and mod it instead if you had to only choose one or the other.

That depends on the player. As I said. Nostalgia=older for the reasons you stated, but gameplay=bfg.
Thx retrofan.... had to buy Doom 3: BFG Edition
I bought Doom 3 BFG because it was on sale this weekend for £5, and I'm just happy I got all expansions included in 1 package.

I couldnt care less what mods there were for the old game, in my view if its modded to a certain level it doesnt represent the original game anymore but a totally different game.
There is more than just graphical and sound mods out there, quite a few very good user made levels and complete conversions. I have one that makes it into a sidescroller, quite fun in itself, and another that changes it to an isometric view 3rd person deal.

But imo gameplay is better in the old one aswell (not from a nostalgia standpoint). I was getting at that I think if you had to choose one, you should go with the older one instead overall.

I meant that there's more gameplay I didn't mean better. I meant good ol' doom gameplay is in the old+the atmosphere is better. There's just 2 extra expansions in this one. 1 for 3 and 1 for 2.

Well, the convieniency is one perk of the BFG edition. But Sikkmod and Wulfen texture pack (high res textures) doesnt change the gameplay at all (except for optional settings in sikkmod, but by default it is just normal doom 3), just enhances the graphics to levels wayyy higher than BFG and still keeps the atmosphere. Also, imo, even without mods, the original is better because it is more atmospheric because of the lack of lighting changes, and if you like the flashlight not being a weapon, you can just install a 1 KB mod which straps the light onto your gun and looks less sloppy than the one seen in BFG. And if you liked the pacing of the BFG edition better, Sikkmod has more options and such ot make it so (like you could even add more enemy spawns). Like I said, the only reasons to get the BFG is for The Lost Mission and achievements, as well as convieniency (like what you stated).
