Yes it has exclusive gameplay. I grew up on the series, beta tested, and did my own coding on modifications across several platform since 94[when I was 4]. This gives you ultimate doom/all 4 eps of doom, doom 2 with NRFTL expansion, and Doom 3[first party modified with 2 expansions ROE and LM[brand new exclusive to the game furthering your fight through hell. There are some cons like in the 2 older dooms...no cheats like IDDQD and so on. Terminal access disables achievements to cheat on Doom 3 related titles, and no 3rd party/fan port modifications are allowed on the prime source. However, you can modifiy via the free source code frome ID SW. There are also graphical improvements, 3D capaibility with bugs, and a change of gameplay style slightly. It is still a challenge, and still good ol' Doom!

Don't forget, doom II in this version is censored.

Theme censored, but not gore censored....gore is still at maximum carnage!

Yes but why buy a censored game when you can have the same uncensored in the same store?

No rest for the living is exclusive to the xbl arcade, ps3's psn, and bfg versions...so...extra gameplay?
Elmasta 10 maj, 2014 @ 13:14
It's just 9 maps. If you are looking for extra maps, go check Doomworld.com .

Honestly, no, I don't think you should.

As a starter, I personally thought Doom 3 was terrible. When it was first released, the screenshots looked awesome, but in actual gameplay, everything looked plasticy. There were very cliche moments that "tried" to make you jump, but were so obvious I just ended up cringing. I also, even as a kid, never liked the play on the word "BFG" as that was just pure, cheese.

As far as FPS's go, this is the traditional old school, which, is fine if you're an old school player. You said you never played doom, so I don't know if you are, but I don't think this would be much fun for someone who isn't old school since FPS's have advanced massively these days (Planetside, BF2 + BFBC2 (I don't want to say BF3/4, even though these are probably the most advanced, they don't bring much other than physics)

Still, these are all multiplayer games, where the single player is either non existent, or rubbish. Doom MP is...well, yeah, I won't even comment on it, so that leaves us with single player. There's not many weapons, and not anything new (but, a chainsaw, which was always fun) and the story is bland, done a million times and not really appealing.

I played the original doom when it was first released on floppy disc, and I loved it. It wasn't my first FPS game but it was the first of it's kind, revolutionary even. I spent hours mastering the game and even set my own challenge to play it on nightmare and completing the game playing it with just 1hp the whole time. However, I think Doom 3 suffers the same as Diablo 3. Diablo 1 and 2 were also revolutionary, again, not the first of it's type, but the best. 15 years later, we got Diablo 3. It was very poorly received, I, myself thought it was rubbish and upset with Blizzard for their lack of effort, but I wasn't the only one, some like it, but most were upset, but why? It's essentially the same game as Diablo 2 right? Well, yes. The thing is, GAMES EVOLVE. 15 years ago, these games were great! But all Diablo 3 was, was D2 just with shiny graphics, games warrant a lot more nowadays.

Doom 3 is the same, while it's not a new game, it's a lot newer than the originals, but it's the same game just with revamped graphics. There was no real storyline in the original doom, and that was fine, it didn't need one, but I think they should have either left it out completely or put far more effort into it, not do it half assed.

So, each to their own, and while I can see some people would like it, and by god did I love the originals and nor was I new to gaming when they were released, I can really see this as more of a nostalgic thing for those who played the originals. I would even go as far to say half life was old school (DM in multiplayer, shoot baddies in single player, no achievements, character progression or any of that) and still, to this day, is one of my all time favourite FPS's.

If you've not played HL and want a shooter, get that. I personally wouldn't recommend this, but each to their own.

And yes, I do have this, just not the BFG edition.

I agree it's pretty good but buying a crapier version of a game just for 9 extra maps is wrong imo. Or if you are a game collector, it's ok I guess...

To answer the OP's question, yes Doom 3 is a good game, but if you've only played modern shooters your whole life, (say, if you're young and that's all you've known) it might not be for you. Doom 3 might be the last "old school" type shooter that came out before the whole modern military shooter craze took over. It's very twitch based, you'll find yourself surrounded by enemies and often times it's better to switch weapons or melee the closest enemy before you take the time to reload, for example. Lots of circle strafing and projectile dodging while frantically shooting down foes around you. It's fun.

it's also about 4 times longer than any shooter that's come out recently. You will probably play the campaign near 20 hours, depending on the difficulty you choose and your playstyle. I personally thought it went on a few hours too long. You'll get your money's worth.

It's very tense and atmospheric and there are plenty of jump startle moments in the game. It's somewhat claustrophobic (being a classic corridor shooter) and you'll probably feel uncomfortable playing it for long stretches at a time, at least I did when I played it when it originally came out.

Something else to consider: John Carmack is a legendary genius of a game developer, and well respected in the industry. Doom 3 was the last Doom game he'll ever leave his mark on, so owning Doom 3 is kind of like owning a small piece of important gaming history. Hit up wikipedia and read more about the man. if you're into that sort of thing.

It's 5 bucks, I say go for it.

And of course, play it in the dark with headphones for the best experience....

Buy only Doom 1 and 2, install Brutal Doom mod.
Done. You'll never need another FPS.

If you like modding and overall a better gaming experience rather than just walk and shoot then get the original Doom 3 not BFG edition.

Just popped in to comment on this last part. This quote is worth the price of admission alone. Well said!

A guide detailing how to uncensor Doom 1 and 2 on Doom 3 BFG (aside from the whole Wolfenstein levels being censored the medkits were also censored due to RedCross-related legalities)
