turning brightness down makes the game scarier
by activating the console commands and turnign the brightness down from there allows you to bring the back to the brightness it had way back when in 2004. now that i have lowered the brightness i found that it helps compencate for the fact that the lights it attached to your armor. it is very scary now and though i played through it a lot back on the original xbox version i find this game scarier because it has a lot of areas the original xbox verson was missing.

to initiate the console for the game go to the games launche options in properties and type this in: +seta com_allowconsole 1. this will allow you to use the console in doom 3 bfg edition (disclaimer: you wont be able to collect acheivments after this code has been used in launch options)
here is the command you use to lower the brightness: +set r_lightscale 1

if this doesnt work let me know. it has been a while since i typed this code in so i will have to do some work to find it again

That's cool and all but you're only impeding your ability to see, you can't turn off the additional light sources that were added in the BFG edition.

i know but i would rather ♥♥♥♥ my pants scared than walk though the game like it is a modern military shooter. im just wanting a good horror game and so far last years set of horro games didnt give me much in terms of scares (resident evil 6, resident evil revelations). dead space 3 was okay but the scares were just like they were in the last few games

"oh look a vent"
necromorph pops out
"oh i jumped a bit now i must shoot it".

i loved dead space over resident evil

OR instead of lowing your ability to see anything, AND not disable achievements, AND have the original lighting back, just type this in the launch options:

+set r_lightscale 1

r_overbrights 1 - Original DOOM 3 Lighting
r_overbrights 2 (default) - New DOOM 3: BFG Lighting

Enjoy!
I don't see any difference.

However +set r_lightscale 1 seems to be working. so should i add overbrights like +set r_overbrights 1
what if i want to use both lightscale and overbrights?

It's also good to change lightscale and other settings like resolution, lodbias and texture filtering in the config file located here:
