Stuck in Doom 2 on Map 13 Downtown - likely some bug
Hey guys,

I am at the end of Doom 2 map 13 Downtown; I just entered the red door and there is an elevator that is supposed to take me up to the yellow key. Only problem is that the elevator only goes up very little and not enough to reach the yellow key; I have seen it go all the way up, but then I fell from it, loaded a save game and now it will not go up anymore.

I think this is a bug. Doom 2 wiki does not mention any known bugs for this level. Does anyone know a workaround for this? I would hate to restart the level... (and no, cheats are not an option, as I want the achievements...)

thanks for the hint;

but it does not really help; in the film, at time index 14:00 the doom guy climbs on the elevator and the elevator rises all the way up to a point where he can jump tp the gold key.

Well, my problem is that for me the lift only goes up like some cm, not nearly enough, and then just stops. Therefore I cannot make the jump to the ledge where the gold key is.

reinstall the game
aveamurechi Jun 22, 2014 @ 7:24am
did like you said, reinstalled the game
Did not help though

Also, I jsut realised that my previous save game was from level 8; that sets me back 5 (yes, you heard it: five) levels

I loved getting to level 13; now, with this stupid stupid stupid setback, it will take a while before I come back to this POS BFG release

Weird...did you try contacting ID?
aveamurechi Jun 24, 2014 @ 11:14am
Yes I did, after you suggested it.... :D

The reply is:
- yes, this is a bug, it happens rarely at that particular elevator, and it has something to do with saving and exiting the game (they were not very specific, but I tend to believe it, because it so happens I was doing a lot of saving :P)

What can I do about it? Nada, Zip, Zilch.
What will ID/Bethesda do about it? Nada, Zip, Zilch. Anyway from the tone of the reply this is a known issue in their house.

I can load a previous saved game (the closest one for me is @ level 8), or die/kill myself if there is no monster left to do it and start over the level... of course with the natural ammo/weapons penalty. Also, I do not know how this affects my ability to unlock some achievements......

So there you go. This sucks, big time.

Hope anybody else reads this and does not get into the same trap.

have this same problem
aveamurechi Jun 30, 2015 @ 11:32am
For me the solution was to redo all levels from my last save, which was level 8. I did not want to risk losing the achievement by dying in the level. And this was on Nightmare difficulty.... I do hope you have a save closer to the moment this happens.....

Anyway, I feel your pain, and I still don't understand why Id/Steam/Whomever does not fix this isssue, since it seems to be known....

A coupla questions:
I ran into the same problem, kinda. Apparently, in wandering, I’d opened the red door to have a looksee and when it wuz time to go for the yellow key, the elevator was stuck down. So, as I save and store every time I enter a level, I could replay the whole thing (Ugh!). But I wonder - if I just used a cheat to get all keys and then turned it off and went on to the yellow door (or if I just warped to the next level) - would I be “labeled” as a cheat from there on out? aveamurechi seemed concerned that he’d lose or screw up some achievements - would using this solution hurt me in some way?

Also, in trying to figure this out, I’ve watched some guide videos. I was amazed at the greater detail and clarity in those videos - way better (and more blood) than I’m seeing in this steam/dosbox version. Is there a better buyable version to be playing that will play on today’s computers. If I’m gonna revisit Doom II, I’d like to see it at its best. *thumbsup*

Hi Strider,

If I remember correctly, my concern was about whether i can still get the achievements if I start over from some levels back (which was my case). At the moment I can confirm that I have reverted back to my last save (something like 5 levels back) and I could still get the achievements I was going for (finish on Nightmare).

However, if you use cheat codes, I think you run a pretty high risk of not getting the achievements. I am not 100% sure, as I have no experience with using cheats. But I do remember that I have read several threads on this very forum where people lost acces to the achievements because they accidentally pressed the ~ during gameplay in Doom 3 BFG Edition (the ~ brings down the console - similar to Quake - and on the console you can "cheat" big time). So, the Doom games seem to have some sort of anticheat mechanisms in place.

I suppose the gameplays you have seen on YouTube with far better graphich were using some better graphics engines which were developed by third parties, long time after the games were released. You can use those, of course (they are freely available online - just run a search), but what you get in the Steam version is the visuals the game had when it first came out originally. So, if you are after the "original", "genuine" experience, the grainy, low resolution graphics is it.

Hey .,.
Wow, Nightmare, eh? I wouldn't last 5 minutes! LOL I figured out that I ruined the elevator by having "peeked in" earlier so I was going to go back to a save near the beginning before I got the red key but I switched to "Doomsday" and so had to restart from the beginning. Way, way better graphics (but not really not original), more save slots, looking up/down, etc. Basically they've upped the graphics and integrated some of the features from later versions of the original Doom line.
As far as the "original graphics", I saw them when I played the game when it came out. This is a cool way to "go back" (and very smooth gameplay). You might wanna consider the Doomsday engine either by restarting or if you ever want to play again - but it doesn't report any achievements to Steam. Having just bought Doom II, Heretic & Hexen from Steam, it's a great find for me 'cause Doomsday plays all three. Any which way you play, good luck on Nightmare. The very thought of it gives me nightmares. :)

Actually, I have to correct something there: I did not finish DOOM 1/2 on Nightmare. Only on Ultra Violence. Just like you, I dred going in there :D. I mean: Ultra Violence was bad enough, but respawning monsters? Come on!!!... Obviously it can be done, but I think it is for the very die hard people who have been playing this game from day one and know every little secret and monster location in and out.

But you are right, modern engines are probably worth a try. Maybe when I decide to bite the bullet and go for Nightmare... That will be a thrill... I'm saving it for a special occasion :))))))).

aveamurechi, don’t know if you’ll see this, but I don’t know how to send this to you directly …

Having only played these games when they came out, I’m new to this whole “modern graphics” thing:
You can download the Doomsday Engine here :

That’s what I’ve been playing (good for Doom, Heretic & Hexen - got ‘em all for less than $5 on Steam).

But it turns out that you can download a third level of advanced graphic for Doomsday here:

I haven’t done that yet (they say you need a torrent client, which they provide a link for). Now these add-ons change the whole look, beyond the regular Doomsday enhancement. From the videos I’ve seen, it works better for Heretic than Doom II, but I guess that’s just a matter of taste. These videos are very dark, but I think that’s just this one player’s settings. Here’s two samples if you’re interested:

Heretic (E1M5) :

Doom II (Level 16) :
