Steam doesn't like the mods because of multiplayer, so to get achievements ID had to remove them. The only real way to get all the mods to work is by modding the source code.

If you search for my topic you can see I posted about giving Doom 3 soft shadows.

well, soft shadows isn't a mod per se. A mod would be Shambler's Castle, or ... eeh, were there any sweet mods for Doom 3 ? o.O

I remember a map based on the movie Event Horizon. Was very impressive. Too bad it won't work with this.

It will, but you have to program the game yourself for that.

I know the old DOOM 3 mods don't work with BFG but is this right, my understanding was they released this on a new engine which enabled them to add Rage Tech and in order for mods to work they have to be rewritten/made.

They fused the two engines. The engine is called the IDTECH 4.5 a fusion of 4[doom 3] and 5[rage]. Mods are unofficial, so a mod menu isn't out of the question. The original mp was based on old ID servers the same used for quake 3 death matches. Steam has a policy where enabling cheats/unfair advantages disables achievements. In order to allow steam achievements through the bfg edition ID had to get rid of the mod menu because of Valve's policies. Why? Some of the mods can give a player advantage and gain achievements with ease....Valve doesn't like that.

No problem. But, ID/John Carmack left one way for mods to be enabled. You have to program them via the source code of the game into. But, that method disables the achievements anyways.

The engine is called Doom 3 BFG, not idTech 4.5 There is nowhere it mentioned, not devs themselves use that naming.

Engine: id Tech 4 with elements of id Tech 5. When ID labels engines they do it by numbers for other devs. It is called the IDTech 4.5 because it is 4 with elements of 5.

You labeled it idTech 4.5, not iD ;)

No, you're confused. The engine is labeled by numbers on a technical term. People just commonly call the first game on the engines the game followed by engine. For example...the quake 3 engine is actually the IDTech 3 you can call it either they do. The same thing is for the IDTech 4.5 only Doom 3 BFG is on this engine. It is the 4.5 because it is half way between 4 and 5 and uses aspects of both, but is more the IDTech 4. By ID's engine numbering it would technically be 4.5 in that case.

"id Tech 4, popularly known as the Doom 3 engine" "id Tech 5, popularly know as the Rage engine" If the Doom 3 BFG editions engine uses aspects of both engines, but is more the 4th engine yet sits between the two...it would be the 4.5

"id Tech 3, popularly known as the Quake III Arena engine" Do you see where I'm going with this? Even ID lists their engines like this....which is who I'm quoting.
