My impressions of BFG Edition vs original Doom 3 with Absolute HD mod
I just bought the BFG Edition on sale for $4 so I could compare it against the original Doom 3, fully modded. I've started a new game in each one, play through an entire section, switch to the other one and then play through it again. I'm using the Absolute HD mod, which combines all of the top mods together in one convenient package. Visually there's no comparison. The lighting, animations, sounds, and textures on the modded version are vastly superior to the BFG edition. That said, the BFG does have some nice additions I wish could be incorporated into the original version:

+ native widescreen support (I have a 21:9 aspect ratio monitor)
+ FOV selector
+ 3D support

Plus the BFG edition runs MUCH faster than the modded version. I'm running the BFG Edition at 3840x1620 (downsampled) with AA cranked all the way up and it's still a buttery 60fps. Meanwhile the modded version runs in the 40-50fps range at 1080p and that's with certain things turned off, like AA and soft shadows. Obviously the lighting engine was simplified on the BFG Edition so it could run on consoles, thus why it looks and performs so different, but it baffles me why they would release it back on PC. I know the textures have been upgraded over the original (unmodded) Doom 3 but other than that I see no point. Especially when all of the mods are free and easy to install.

Completely agree . I still play the vanilla version over BFG edition because with the addition of mods it is just superior in every way, provided your pc can run the mods fine ofcourse. I'm running the mods maxed out myself @ downsampled 2560x1440 and keeping a steady 60fps , but this is only achievable because I'm running high end sli cards .

But if you do not have the horsepower and just want to play the game smooth , then BFG edition might be a better option for you. It's updated engine is more optimized and runs better . My problem wtith it though is the brighter levels, just kinda lowers the atmosphere immersion IMO compared to vanilla . Vanilla with mods is even more atmospheric , you can customize sikkmod any way you want making the games look unique to your personal taste.

It's hard to play BFG edition though if youv seen comparison screenshots beside modded doom 3 lol . Check some out in one of my threads

I'm running dual GTX 670s in SLI and still barely hit 60fps with the modded version. Can you post your DoomConfig.cfg file so I can compare it to mine?

I would love it if someone could implement the engine optimizations from BFG Edition into the older code. I know that id released the source code to the BFG Edition so theoretically it's possible. If I could get the speed of BFG with the graphical fidelity of a fully modded Doom 3 then I'd be a happy camper

Could you also let me know what you're using for an SLI profile. I'm using (0x00000001), which is the default. I noticed the BFG Edition uses (0x00000004).

BFG edition is prefer because it is the smoothest frame rate on my computer. it runs so well at all maxed out settings at 60 frames (despite BFG edition not having tons of graphics options)

You can play the BFG Edition in Steam with mods:

It works and
you can have the best of both worlds ;-)
