HOWTO: Hires Textures for win/mac/linux
Hi all, To play with Hires texture mods you need to run RBDOOM3 wich is built from the source code id software released. Win users can grab a precompiled exe, but mac and linux users need to compile it themselves. https://github.com/RobertBeckebans/RBDOOM-3-BFG

I have only tested this on linux myself, and found no problems at all after about 4 hours play.
It also plays the included doom1 and doom2.

Ofcoarse no Achievments or steam integration with this. But it looks great! Has soft shadows implemented and other improvements.
Here is some pics https://imgur.com/a/byaex

For windows:
download
https://github.com/RobertBeckebans/RBDOOM-3-BFG/releases/download/v1.0.2-ATI-hotfix1/RBDOOM-3-BFG-1.0.2-ATI-hotfix1-win32-20140517-git-952907f.7z

then extract it to (steams default location)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Doom 3 BFG Edition\

Download the Hires texture pack from here
http://www.moddb.com/mods/perfected-doom-3-version-500/addons/perfected-doom-3-texture-pack-v20

extract the .zip, then extract the .pk4 into
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Doom 3 BFG Edition\base\

run the game with the RBDoom3BFG.exe that you extracted to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Doom 3 BFG Edition\

Mac and Linux:
Full instructions for compiling the code aand getting the assets from steam are here https://github.com/RobertBeckebans/RBDOOM-3-BFG

Some distros of linux have packages, I have seen arch, and ubuntu packages.

Once you got it compiled and running,

Download the Hires texture pack from here
http://www.moddb.com/mods/perfected-doom-3-version-500/addons/perfected-doom-3-texture-pack-v20

extract the .zip, then extract the .pk4 into the folder called "base" that you copied from steam.

HAVE FUN ALL!

Well it's a different version of BFG built from the source code that was released opensource from id software. So with the source code we can do what ever we want to the game.
This version has been changed to allow loading of the old doom3 textures aswell as soft shadows and fov options in the menu. And other goodies too. Also Linux and mac support.

Hold in I'm a bit confused here. Is it another rebuild of doom 3 then and not actually BFG edition?

I mean BFG uses a different engine which I think is a combo of idtech 4 and 5. Do you guys have full access to that or something ? Or are you just using doom 3 vanilla's source code .

Yes it's BFG. ID released the source code. As they did for for the original doom 3 and other engines. Try it. It's great.

Ahh cool ! I didn't know they actually released the source code for this game aswell . Keep up the good work . I do really want to play BFG edition instead because of the more optimized advanced engine , just ATM I cannot play without my mod combos lol . But good job man .

This sadly didn't work for me. Textures look the same, but shadows are almost nonexistant now. The vanilla version looks much better.

How do you load the "high texture" mod, when starting the game? RBDoom in itself seem to work fine, but the textures stay the same.

You need to extract the .zip the textures are in, then extract the .pk4 into your "base" folder.
It doesn't seem to load them out of the .pk4

You can delete the original Doom3BFG.exe and rename the new one into Doom3BFG.
Then you can launch the game form your steam library.

Thank you for the mod install instructions! Is there anyway to augment this mod with additional
mods, i.e. Sound or Weapon Mods?

Holy S....t! SO BFG is moddable after all. Great work! Now there's more reasons to buy it finaly)
If only someone returned originl doom 3 ammo count and maybe add some more health to enemies!!!
Well done anyway!!!!

I tried it and it worked for me as well. Although the lighting/shadows still don't look as good as the original Doom 3 it's a reasonable sacrifice to make for 60fps at 4K.

Ofcoarse, the source code is there. Get in and change it how you want it. The sky is the limit!
