Can someone help me with these issues?
What technology/combination of technologies does it take to gain access to cruiser and battleship hulls? I always lose because I cant figure it out. The one game I won I gained it by accident.

When playing solo, I have sometimes encountered a situation where I cannot use a wormhole to another faction's system, even though I can travel through wormholes. Are there situations where I can lose this access?

Were you at peace with the faction and had open borders?
I think the cruiser hull is the one where it has reduced tonnage on invasion and the battleship is the reduced tonnage on defense.

1. Look in the Exploration tree (bottom) for the various ship techs. You need those.
2. Influence. That other faction's influence has prevented you from venturing into their territory. You can travel to undiscovered SSes, but you cannot reenter them if they are encompassed by another faction's influence.

Thanks to both of you. Again, I wish these hidden gems were more clearly outlined. It would have made for a great appendix in the manual.

Well the tech tree is a great appendix by itself. For example about battles, sure you need unlock better ships but also you can unlock more command points through some technologies (left tree) this allowing stronger fleet. Or some technologies allows increase tonnage capacity of all ships so it is increasing how many weapons/defense/stuff any ship can board, so effectively increase fleet power, or some building can be build on system to provide bonus to ships build in that system, and so on.

For some details about movements and constraints in fact the manual has some information about that including some stuff about frontiers and more.

When everything else fails. Destroyers will only weapons. Nice suicide units that can 1v1 kill anything the AI builds.

Is it just me or AI seems tend be obsessed by 1st and 3rd phases weapons and defenses? Ie focusing on 2nd phase attack and on defense for 1st and 3rd phases seems quite efficient.

I dono about 3 rarely get past 2 >.>. I get alot of sabotage for 1 and 2 though, if not its usually weapons i almost never see defense.

True story. But for me, I almost always see either Sabotage, or Defense. Nobody ever goes offense. But then again, I'm always the one who attacks before the AI does.

My quote wasn't about the cards but about ships characteristics that you can check in detail before the fight. So AI seem ignore second range attack and defense.
