Pirates are stronger than factions?
Had a game running with normal pirates and get a random event with 4 fleets of 3000mp apear at my homeworld? Were do these "pirates" get thier ships seriously? I understand they're supposed to be an annoyance but when they roll up with a faction sized fleet (or bigger) I find it hard to belive they're pirates. The algorythim deffinitly needs to be nerfed or pirate bases need to be added to explain where the hell a battle fleet magicly apears from inside a fortifed empire.

Pirates are bugged atm. You can go to the main forums and there is a whole mess of posts about it.

aah good to know, had the same problem on my first run. Made the game very hard from the beginning. Is there an ETA on a solution / bugfix?

i think the pirates scale to the players since one time i used a mod and found 2 pirates fleets of 60 ships each

if you are using mods try removing them and see if the pirates are still so strong

It's not a mod issue. My very first game was on a tiny map with only one opponent, and by turn 10 or so, there were maybe 10 pirate fleets flying around - each with at least one "experienced" fighter-type/kinetic ship.

Pirate ships spawn on neutral systems that neither you nor your opponent can "see".

So by placing a single scout ship on nearby neutral systems, you neutralize any and all pirates near your empire.

well thats good to know... i had 3 fleets on 2500 mp take one of my colonies in 3 turns it was turn 20

if you play with pirates you need to know how to prevent them from spawning, if you have vision on a system a pirate will not spawn there. Colonize quickly get your scouts into an area that can view two systems or at least be at a distance from your home world and the planets you are trying to colonize to reduce the speed in which they move onto your planets.
I wouldn't say it's a bug. Pirates showed up on my game when I had basically "won" (had fleet strength and score much further than all the other factions). Their fleet strength was just a notch above mine. I ended up having to kill their organized fleets (I chose Selfish I believe, the one where they send them to you but don't take your empire) by sacrificing twice the number of Dreadnaught fleets to pirate fleets. Each pirate fleet could sustain a hit from my fleets with roughly 1/3 health left.

But I agree. Their fleet strength should be tuned down by a notch, at least so it pars or just below-pars the strength of a full Dreadnaught fleet. But it's not something I'm complaining about. It's indeed an interesting addition.

I think that the pirates are way op, I was at ~55 turns, against pirate fleets of 4400mp of lasers, against my best fleet of 900mp. Pirates should not be able to outclass military ships at all, or have access to weaponry the military has even developed. A great summary I read on another thread is that it is like Somali, but reversed, NATO has dingies and the Somalian pirates have cruisers and battleships. They have no planets, but can out produce a (small) empire, both with ships and tech.

Really killing the mod of the game, hope they get lowered down in a patch, or reworked. They are not a seperate faction.
No offense intended here, but I think you guys just need to man-up and not be intimidated by their stats. Pirates are not OP, they are difficult but definitely not OP. I am still a noob so I ended up beating the pirates using Kinetic weapons (yes, feel free to laugh at me haha, hilarious I know I know, to date I haven't acctually completed a single game yet - spent a few hours playing so far). Now that I'm slightly less of a noob I can see that its quite possible to build a SINGLE ship with > 1000 MP each. Late game 2000 MP+ per ship should be possible.

I don't think the pirates are a bug, nor should they be nerfed. If they were, what challenge would there be in the entire game? It would just be boring, no ?

For most people pre-late game, even if you built huge Dreadnaught fleets, you would need some form of fodder style attack to whittle down their health in order to kill them.

They are indeed strong, but not impossible. If anybody deems them to be annoying, just disable pirates in the advanced options of the game. They're specifically designed to be a nuisance.

Even turning them off isn't guaranteed to protect you, as certain events causes them to spawn on homeworlds. The upside is, if the event happens to you, you can choose to spawn them on other players homeworlds. Get this early enough in the game, and they can shut down an opposing players progress completely.

Events in themselves are rare occurrances, so it shouldn't constitute as making pirates "broken" perse. The option to disable them only affects wandering pirates, not event-based ones. But still, it adds to the uniqueness of the game, and I don't mind them. Poses a good challenge for those who are too strong ;)

Those events don't pop up if you disable pirates, that was patched around christmas.
