Pirate Issue
The update from today allows pirates to appear as random events, even if you have set pirate difficulty to 0.

Please fix this as soon as possible, since it renders this option unusable and it is one of the most prominent options I select.

For some reason I always get pirates within 2 turns if I don't--which pretty much kills the game for me.

I love the game, except for the pirates. Their strength is more than an order of magnitude greater than mine - despite being the dominant empire on easy level, a single system of pirates can generate an undefeatable fleet. This destroys the enjoyment of the game for me and makes me regret buying it.

This thread is actually old: we ended disabling pirated as mentioned in the OP. Besides, at the time, pirates have been nerfed as well: they should be very easy to exterminate in early game, but the more you wait, the stronger they get. You can always disable the "pirates" if you go in the settings: then, no pirates should spawn in your game.

I got this pirate Event early in the game. It was TOTALLY unbalanced. Massive Fleets of 9 pirate ships with missles appeared, while I could only build fleets of 7 CP. I ended up defeating them by building tons of throw away ships but I was so far behind that it wasn't worth continuing as it took me about 100 turns to defeat the pirates.

I know I'm late to this, but I picked up the game during the Steam summer sale and am just now finding time to check it out. Cool game, but the pirates are incredibly annoying. The last game I just attempted to play (on one of the easiest settings) with 4 factions total, I spent the entire game (so far) chasing and confronting pirates in my arm of a spiral. All my manufacturing time was spent making ships to protect colonization ships I was trying to get out. Meanwhile, the other 3 factions colonized nearly all of their spiral arm. It was ridiculous.

The pirate event literally hit me the first turn and took me out of the game entirely. This is not right.

you need to understand the mechanic, they will not spawn if you have vision over the area so you can control how and where they spawn if you plan for it.

The Super Nova mod tones the pirates down so you can keep them on without having them ruin your game.

I've never had pirate issues (I play normal difficulty). Also keep in mind, you need not always win. Think of it as another challenge. That said, perhaps 100 turns is a bit ridiculous. Sorry you had to endure.
