How powerfull an faction is is mostly determined by how evolved its systems are, not how many it has. In technical terms it always comes down to FIDS and its possible to generate more FIDS with 5 systems then a lower-tech enemy with 20 systems even tho in the end you are correct, more systems usually equal more power (when technology levels balance out across all surviving factions)
Are you playing classic or Disharmony?
What game speed are you playing?
What difficulty are you playing?
Disharmony has a special invasion system which classic has not. It involves troops and enables an enemy faction to instantly take over systems if the systems defense values are low enough. This would generate an ingame message tho (along with any other notifications)
When you say "spread over half of what I own" what do you actually mean?
Moving into your empire?
Putting half of what you own under siege?
Flipping half of what you own?
Are their fleets sitting on system orbits of yours or are they "flying through"?
As you can see, your report makes it impossible to give an answer but generates a lot more questions. Got any screenshots by chance?
