Football Manager 2013

Just cannot win a game... help!
Ok, new to FM games but I started off with Bristol Rovers (favourites to win NPL2) did everything I felt was necessary with regards to formation, kept things balanced, etc. Played about 10 games and was getting losses most games.
Thought I may be doing something wrong so started again with Port Vale (2nd favourites for promotion). This time left all the behind the scenes to management so I could concentrate with playing league matches. Just played a few games lose 4 nil, 2 nil, 5-2. Even when it says I was way ahead favourites to win.
I try tweaking tactics and I keep 4 or 5 sometimes in defence so I'm not being stupid and going all out attack.
I've played the odd management game in the past and enjoy choosing the best side in the lowest league and taking them up through the divisions but so far a win for me seems so far away.

Thanks. I give this a try!
I do warn you though, does not mean guranteed win but it is a strong tactic for most tactics used against you. It will take time for players to familiarise themselves with new tactics so be patient.

Also, it is important to stick to one tactic, if you keep changing tactics it is not going to work. Also start individually training players to the position you want them to play. For example, if you want to use this tactic then start training your players to the role shown. i.e start training your wingers as inside forwards, left and right defenders as full backs etc..

Also, it is not just about the players, it is about your match preperation, quality of staff and quality of facilities. try to improve all of these areas when possible as this also increases your chances of success.

i have barely touched the surface on how to be successful, I am still trying to master this game as well and my team i am managing atm (norwich) is going through a bad period of form so do not worry when things are not going your way.

I wish you luck and try and enjoy the journey.

Let me know how it goes and if you want any more tips just send me a message. Although I am no expert, i can give you is tips based on hours upon hour of play :p

I do try to keep to maybe 2 strategies (main setup and a backup tactic). I just thought that choosing possibly the best team in the division may give me a bit of an advantage.
I'm not expecting to win every match but it is just how bad the team are performing game after game.
Ii have now started again with Port Vale and have also started Classic Mode. I've started using the formation it has suggested (although the game suddenly calls it a 4-4-2 formation) and have won 2 and lost 1 so far... good enough for me, lol.
Like you say, as I familiarise myself with my team I should hope i'll improve.
I'll see how I get on tomorrow night when I get an hour or 2 on it.

Hard to say where you're going wrong without seeing your tactics and team and how all your losses actually played out. I'm against downloading tactics as it detracts from your own skill and investment in the game, but I do have one big tip for you- man management is huge this year, while tactics are less important than in the past. Yeah, they certainly make a difference and are the difference between a good manager and a great one, but as long as you're playing a sensible formation and putting out your best guys in roles that make sense for their skills and your total team playstyle, you'll do ok. Player morale makes a big difference though. If you're going through a tough stretch, talking to your players one on one or holding a team meeting can give them the boost necessary to turn things around
