I've seen my share of zombie movies and played my share of zombie games without ever becoming particularly impressed by any. Honestly I find most of them outright stupid, and with the zombie hype that has been going on the last few years the genre as a whole mostly leaves a foul taste in my mouth. But somehow I got talked into watching this show called "The Walking Dead" and it totally blew me over. Well written, great character building and feelings flying all over the board. I found it amazing that something related to zombies could be THAT good.
Then I learned about that this series, or rather the universe of that series, was going to be carried over to an episodic adventure type game by no other than Telltale Games. A company that has helped keeping the adventure genre of gaming alive when it felt almost extinct. As a BIG adventure game fan I have happily supported this company by getting mostly everything they have put out, and that was also mainly the reason I got this series as well.
I honestly had very little expectation of how this game series would be as I failed to see how it even would work to transfer the great writing and suspense that I experienced in the TV-series to an adventure type game. Even though I read good reviews of it I kept putting off playing it. I was absolutely certain that it was going to leave me disappointed.
Well, finally I got around to play it, and now I kick myself fo not playing it sooner. I can not believe how good this game is. I don't think I can remember better storywriting in any game I've played before. You really get to know the characters you meet and you get feelings and opinions about them. You're forced to make tough decisions in critical moments and you can never be sure if you did the right thing. Well, there is not really any clear right or wrong. There is mostly various shades of grey. Not only that, but your decisions affect the ones around you, and they will remember what you did or didn't do, and the game itself shapes itself around all this and creates different routes and takes on what you experience while playing through it.
All characters are masterfully voiced by a selection of excellent voice actors that helps making the experience close to magical. You'll find yourself laughing, crying, yelling at the screen and acting in panic. And you'll probably feel that you're in the middle of it all.
Now, it has to be said that this game is probably not for everybody. I can see, and even understand that people might find the gameplay itself to be a bit dull or repetetive and probably feel there is little gameplay at all. If you hate QTE's then you might want to shy away if you do not appreciate a good story. Also, even though I quite like the artstyle I see some people being thrown off a bit by the comic like cel shading, and I believe the game would be even better with a bit more realistic touch. It certainly looks good enough in its own way and should in any way be avoided with that as a reason.
I consider this game to be one of those games you absolutely should not allow yourself to miss out on. It is a game for the history books and you would want to tell your grandchildren that you were there to play it.
I rate this game 10/10
Recommended for everybody who appreciate video games, and their mothers too.
