Yunica vs Mantid
I already had plenty of trouble beating this fella with Hugo and since Yunica is melee, I suspect this battle will be even more difficult. So does anyone have any tips for me to beat it?

Yunica's fire magic has more range than Hugo's basic attack and when charged has pretty much unlimited range (and passes through enemies). Also the charged fire attack helps keep the minions under control.

That said, it would be a good idea to learn the best windows for the melee attacks if you want to beat the game with all of the characters.

I tried the uncharged fire attack but I couldn't hit diddly squat with it, even when facing the boss. I guess I'll have to practise first.

I wrote an essay but the safe way takes so long you need to know how to dodge everything.

The safest way is to use charged fire magic only. Ideally use it immediately after dodging and attack.
-Getting close to the boss will cause it to use an attack that will damage you if are in close proximity and is hard to dodge, so stay about a third to a half of the room length away or more.
-Run to the sides and loop back and forth from side to side to avoid the lasers.
-Its usual attack of the green circular things are easy to dodge by moving to the side and jumping.
-In between the sets of usual attacks it will leap high and land at the opposite end of the room, pushing you away, while sending 2 lines of spikes to either side, just step away from these.
-It will go beast mode and form 4 arm things and chase you. You can run circles around the edge of the room, but be careful that you don't get too much to one side of it or the lower arm will hit you. If it starts catching up, you can run up to slightly off of its front center, and it will send out its normal attack, which you can jump over and dodge completely if you are positioned correctly.
-It will do another leap, landing close to you and sending 4 paths of spikes out from its (damaging) center. 2 paths come straight out from its front, then curl out to the side. The other 2 come fromt its sides and twist toward the front paths. In between a front and side path, or adjacent to the front path should be safe.
-It will revive multiple times, and after each one will do its first leaping attack. You can get a phoenix off if you release the magic before being pushed away, before pictimos lands.

Shouldn't I focus on his minions before finishing him off? He uses those to heal himself.

It's easier to just keep wailing on the boss for a revive or two, his minions grow weaker each revive and eventually just stop spawning altogether.

At some point, it stops to "summon" a number of laser beams; at this point, I ran up to it and spammed the phoenix fire skill until I was out of MP. Otherwise, I just sniped at it with the charged phoenix.

If you don't get all his minions fast, it will stop to respawn more of them before it does its revive. So it is easier to just damage pictimos through its revives.

The charged phoenix really did the trick for me. It has a great range and can damage the Mantis AND kill the minions at the same time. If you're lvl 41+ it'll go well.

I found it really more difficult with Hugo personnally.

I found that with each revive Pictimos regenerates less. Also, while phoenix is nice when you are distant, a bolt crash or two will definitely hurt him if you get close enough.

I recommend using Lv.43 if you are Normal and make sure you blessed your armor and boots. Also, your weapon should be Lv.6.

How does it choose how many minions to send out? Or do those things actually get weaker over time?

It depends on how many times you "kill" it. I don't know exactly how it works, but each kill causes his little guys to deal less damage and take more damage, and eventually he starts spawning less and less of his guys, too.

Difficulty setting ultimately determines how many times he'll spit out a group of little dudes before giving up on that.
