If you are only gonna play through the game once...
...then which character do you think would be the best to go with?

Since I sense a certain response coming, based on Oath I expect I will enjoy the game a good deal. I also know myself and I simply very rarely play through a game a second time. If it was a three or so hour game then maybe, if I kept my levels and was just powering through to see other story stuff at an absurdly quick rate then maybe. Playing through a ten-ish hour long game three times because the character has different attacks? Unlikely. I'd like to say that I'd give the extra third character a shot if there was something truly noteworthy about them, but that could likely be a lie.

So hey, I assume some of you think that is silly or dumb, let's just accept it as my loss. I also assume many of you played through with everyone, if you could only do it once who'd you find it to be most enjoyable with? Gracias.

Toal of course...

After you need to finish the game with Yunica or Hugo to get access to the Story of Toal it doesnt matter if you play Yunica or Hugo....finily the better and the "real" Story with the "real" Boss has Toal.
I played every char once now and i think its more intresting to see the conflict between the brother from both sides then to get some inforation about Yunica and the Angels (Yunicas Story). DerXello

The third character is very fun to play as, his story is more interesting than Yunica's or Hugo's story and he is only one who can fight the true boss. You can't play as him until you finish the game with Yunica or Hugo first though and even if you could, it would be pretty confusing since the game assumes you already know some things when you play as the third character (the game says he is "Expert only" but I find him easier to play with than Yunica or Hugo). If you want to play as the third character, play as Hugo since his story is heavily connected to the third character's. Otherwise just figure out whether you prefer playing as Yunica or Hugo and go with one of them.

I really do recommend playing as the third character since his ending is MUCH more satisfying.

I personally enjoyed playing as Hugo more than Yunica

I've finished Yunica's story and am pretty far into Hugo's and partly into the 3rd. I myself like Yunica's more than Hugo's, but I would also at least recommend to take the time to do the 3rd on very easy once you've done the first run. It has some cutscenes that add to the story. I did nightmare first and by the first boss, I had just acquired level 5 with a little bit of grinding. On a very easy game I started, with no grinding I was level 6 by the time of getting to the first boss, which was beaten with no difficulty. The game has been speed ran in less than 2 hours, so above that would just be reading the dialogue. If you feel 2-3 hours isn't too much, you could do the 3rd on very easy.

How dare you all not agree on one or the other, you're worthless~ ;)

Seriously though, thanks for the suggestions. For those that care I ended up going with Yunica.

I started playing with Yunica. Although since once I'm done I probably will go back Ys: Oath (or 1 and 2 on my DS) and play them again I'm also playing Hugo on hard simultaneously. I'd love to play as the third character but that won't be for a while even after I complete this game.

If I may be late on this, I would not even count not finishing the third character's story as finishing the game's story at all. It has nothing to do with you being silly or dumb or anything like that, but consider it a "true route/ending" that wraps up the story of the game and makes it the prequel to the rest of the Ys series that it is.

I recommend at the very least playing only Yunica OR Hugo (looks like you went with Yunica) and then the third character. I actually think XSeed's localization made this easier (in the original Japanese release you HAD to complete both Yunica/Hugo to unlock the third character).

Just my three cents on this!

Well looking at the stats alone most people preferred to complete the game as Yunica. But playing through Hugo's journey I find he's quite the ♥♥♥♥♥. He has a better relationship with Epona than any of the characters on his side. I suppose any anti-hero would.

I actually ended up being convinced to give it a shot with Hugo and have been making absurdly good time with him (he's basically a long range glass cannon with a great defensive spell which almost seems to make him an easy mode character) so it looks like I'll end up completing it with two of the three characters. After that I'll go play another game or two for a while and probably at least give the third guy a shot.

So yeah... this topic ended up almost being a complete waste of time. Sorry :(

I highly recommend picking up 1&2 Chronicles here on Steam. The the DS version was the first one I played, and it just cannot compare to the PC version, sadly. What's worse is that the DS should have been the perfect platform for it.

I much preferred hugo, if only for the charged fire wheel.
poopfist 13/jul/2013 às 4:11
I would say Yunica but thats only cuz she's so kawaii and mai waifu
ladynadiad 13/jul/2013 às 17:54
Hugo most definitely. His play style is fun and his path has the most entertaining story of the three because his bickering with, well, pretty much everyone, is just hilarious.

I loved Hugo too. He plays different from typical Ys so its a nice changeup.
