Nightmare For First Playthrough
I decided to play this on nightmare for my first playthrough, since I did the same for Ys1, but I'm not a complete masochist so I wanted to make sure that there is a possibility of finishing it.

So first playthrough on nightmare, a good idea or a bad idea? Or am I just totally crazy? Please tell me.

It's literally a nightmare. But you will wake up.. eventually..
but really normal felt hard as hell for me. Nightmare could be kind of stressful

i started a nigmare run after my completition of a normal run and nightmare is really a nightmare at first but with a lot of grinding and after several deaths you can get used to it

Grinding seems like a good idea, hopefully you don't hit level cap halfway through like you do in Ys1?

finsihed a normal run yesterday on level 51 so i guess the level cap is eather 99 or 100 (depending). Still i had some trouble with normal already so i want to finsih the game at least once with every character to get a feeling for them and also learn the bosspatterns (something that realy helps even on normal other naormal playthroughs)

Also depending on your choice of character it can be a bit easier or difficult if you cant handle the char well. I myself started as Yunica and switched to Hugo after halfway through the Flooded Prison just to try him and play through with him since i liked his playstyle more.

Still this game is fun even if you want to smash your controller/keyboard on certaint parts (f you pictimos )

Level cap is 60 for this game, as well as in YsF, Ys VI, and Ys Celceta.

As far as Nightmare for a first playthrough goes, I wouldn't recommend it. With the exception of Ys Seven (and possibly Celceta), that difficulty lives up to its name. Sure, most bosses can be beaten with a little bit of extra grinding, but still... To be honest, I never understood why some people insist on doing the hardest difficulty the first time through a game, especially since such difficulties tend to be geared towards those that have already played the game and understand the fundamentals well enough to want to take the challenge to another level. And generally speaking, the fundamentals are best learned during a normal playthrough of something, not when the challenge is at its toughest.

This game is pretty easy even on Nightmare. The only boss i had problem with was Kishgal. And probably desert flower when i was playing as Hugo. So if you are good with action games then I suggest to play on Nightmare.

I'd advise against it for a lot of reasons.

The way the damage calculations work, a level discrepancy multiplier applies to all damage taken and dealt, and on Nightmare it's inflated tremendously -- one level often means half to a third of the damage against a boss. It's highly recommended to play through on a more reasonable difficulty just to have the bestiary complete so you know when you're underleveled and when you just need to be playing better.

That, and Ys 1/2 boss fights are simple, quick, messy, and rely more on stats than anything. In modern Ys games they're complex and bloody endurance matches where just a couple slip-ups get you killed if you're playing on any higher than Normal, and you need to know exactly what you're doing from the beginning.

Furthermore, the way the upgrades work, you get a pretty fixed amount of SP on Nightmare and you really need the experience to prioritize properly.

Is ys1 nightmare really so much easier? All the people flipping Dark Fact the bird after completing nightmare make me think a lot of people found it challenging. Plus, Origin so far has been fairly forgiving. To be sure: Would I overleveled fighting Vaguillion at level 6? Or was he a tutorial boss, who was much easier than any of the others? Since after leveling to 6 I was able to defeat him in 2 tries, and the first I was just being dumb and walked right into his claw.

Vaguillion is realy just a tutorial boss in Yunicas story (since you fought him first you have to play as her Hugo fights him a bit later) and realy easy in comparison.

As i see it each Tier of the tower has a "Miniboss" and a Tierboss. The Miniboss is most the time not super difficult but they can give you a fight that can be quite difficult (your even supposed to loose to the Guilty Fire Miniboss). The tierbosses however are the real deal since they deal quite alot of dmg and if you don't watch they can realy pin you and drain your HP faster than you can look.

Its mostly a combination of having the right level and knowing the boss patterns to overcome most of the bosses and Vaguillion has a pretty basic pattern so he is pretty easy but i cant say much about Nightmare only played through it on normal and even there some bosses made me loose my mind (again Pictimon is a Nightmare)

How is level 7 for Velagunder? Is it about the right level or should I be higher? Since I might need a level or two more before I'd feel confident against this guy.

first time i fought Velagunder with Yunica was with level uhhhm i think 8 or so and it took me some tries hes not extremly difficult only thing you should just keep in mind is that he will heal himself if he eats the small maggots he releases

Also once your about halfway through it he starts using a flaming swipe attack that is realy hard to avoid if your to close to his body so keep a bit of a distance if he did not attacked after a while

Also you can pop the bubbles he belches out (only Yunica and the secret char can do that) and the Whirlwind is usefull for taking out maggots and swatting at his weakspot.

Just did him a while ago with the secret char and i was level 8 and he died pretty fast (even though it was close 7 HP left)

Good info, on nightmare he starts using the flaming sweep attack after you first damage him, so I'm going to have to figure out how to dodge that correctly. I also can't seem to figure out how to pop bubbles :\ I'm thinking it might not be possible on this difficulty.

hmmm ok didnt know that it might be not possible to pop them on higher ones.

A good idea to get some distance on the flaming swipe is to use the whirlwind. its the only reliable way i found to get away a bit since it gives you a little speed boost.

Thats one of the problems i had with Yunica in comparison to the other 2 chars she doesnt realy has a reliable way to dodge attacks till you get the silverbracelet (that you get in the Flooded Prison) since both Hugo and the Secret Char have a way to eather avoid attacks or block it (Hugo gets a shield as his windskill that blocks the first attck that hits him)

Well that was pretty tough until I figured out the easy way to kill him. I didn't realize you could ignore the worms and still keep him from healing lol. (I actually haven't found anyone else doing it this way, maybe its a new stratagy :D )
