Dungeon Editor: The ups and the downs
I personally am delighted to have the ability to create my own Legend of Grimrock dungeons. It's simple to use, and at the same time you can get as complex as you need. I've been waiting for a while and my expectations have definitely been... nearly reached.
Don't get me wrong, this is an awesome tool (hell, i even have my dungeon open in the background right now). But... there are definitely a few flaws, big ones unfortunately.
This post is to talk about the highs and the lows of Legend of Grimrock's Dungeon Editor.

1. Alcove Shenanigans. I dislike being unable to place boxes, scrolls, or bags with things written/placed in them (aside from using LUA scripting. It works, but it's slow). Hopefully this can be fixed later

2. Pre-set testing. This isn't a huge issue but honestly, I would rather have my characters for testing set up the way I play, to ensure that I can play to my optimum ability.

3. Tedious Creation. I'm one of those people that will play dungeon after dungeon. Unfortunately I forsee MANY people making tiny 1-floor dungeons. Going through the tedious task of creating the same party time after time is going to get almost excrutiatingly boring. Perhaps there could be a quickload set up for a few different parties.

4. Is this gonna be overpowered? One HUGE flaw I've noticed is my inability to know whether or not an item is being placed in a place where it will be used without being overpowered. Perhaps in the item selection bar it could give a preview of item stats?

5. MOAR CONTENT! This is more of a minor point, but I wouldn't mind seeing some smaller updates in the future involving more content (specifically dungeon styles) Maybe even varying wall types to change a small section of one of your floors into, for example, dirt, rock, and roots?

6.Lack of Scrolling? I've found that when trying to connect plates and buttons to many things I'm unable to go past a certain amount without having to shrink the preview window. And if shrinking the preview window doesn't let me connect what I need, then im screwed!

7. Item type conversion! The name might be a little confusing but what I'm looking for is (for example) if I place down a dungeon plate, i could click it and access a dropdown menu to change it from DUNGEON plate to TEMPLE plate.

8. Mass Eventing. The name, again, might be confusing. What I mean by Mass Eventing is (for example) If i select 3 buttons, due to the fact that they all share the ability to be connected to an item, I can place a collection on ALL 3 by using a dropdown menu while X amount are selected.

9. Grand Searching. I find it difficult when I leave a project for a few days and come back, only to have to end up looking at past floors to see which items i've given to the players so I don't end up re-giving them. I propose a search that will highlight the floors that said item is on.

Well those are my problems. Overall I give the editor a 9/10. How about you? what are your thoughts or suggestions to help Grimrock become even MORE amazing?

I'd say put your suggestions up on the official forum if you haven't already. The devs have been pretty active there, so they'd likely see it. Also, they are planning on releasing an assets pack fairly soon that might address some of your concerns with items and content.

alright kev, thanks. I figured they were gonna fix a bunch of issues and even add things, this post is less of a ♥♥♥♥♥ing post and more of a "this is what I've noticed" sort of thing.

i agree with you, especially on 3 5 and 8
i had a room full of torches (to light up a path to a secret path i created ) and i had to select each torch individually to light it.

I myself will try to create as much as i can, not just a single tiny floor, oh well, if they give us the chance of rating a level after we played, those horrible tiny 1 floor levels will have low ratings anyway :)

That would take some time considering most of what's left for them to do is Hard coded.

so? its not like im gonna rush over to the developers and hold them at gunpoint until they make new content. If i can wait for Pre-releases, minecraft updates, and heresay game news to be confirmed, then I can wait for some content

I never said it was impossible for them to make new content.Just most of the things that they had in game before they decided to make the editor was all hardcoded. But now I'm just twisting your words unknowingly.

well I never said you said it was impossible to make new content. I'm just saying that we'll have to wait due to not wanting to release tiny updates of 1 new item each time. Aswell as having to tweak and edit many bugs they may have

Thanks Steels12 for the feedback. We agree with most of your points. I'm not sure if we can solve all of them, but we'll look what can be done. -Juho from AH.

Mass Eventing (8) - or at least combined common property editing - is definitely the main thing I'd like to see. The torch holder issue Dominance mentioned is one I had too. I've added this type of feature myself in game editors so, although I know it might be tricky to do well, it is definitely possible. (Please don't overlook it, Juho!)

A good set of points by Steels12 in general, I thought. I'd like to add that overall, I think this editor is fantastic (and when in the games industry, making editors is pretty much what I did - so it's really nice to see something this well thought out :-))

I did have one crash due to copy-pasting something in the Lua editor (not been able to reproduce it as yet for bug reporting purposes, unfortunately) but other than that, a very high quality beta. Keep up the good work guys!
