That's not going to cause Windows to reject your games though. It's all security updates and stuff. I just mentioned it had all the normal patches so no wiseacres would say "so you turned Windows Update off lolwut?".
Following their recommendation that is exactly what I did. There are less games available, and its slightly different to use... but it seems more stable and is definitely a lot faster. I can see why Valve recommended it.
From now on, if a game isnt coming out for linux I dont need it. Windows is just too much trouble to be worth it for me anymore.
Best of Luck
Got a reference for that claim? All i recall is that Valve is unsatisfied with Win8 because MS seems to leave the open platform path they followed up to Win7.
Differences in performance are usually cased by Windows lower performing DirectX but as soon as OpenGL is used those differences become so small they are hardly noticeable.
Valve openly comes out and says that windows 8 is terrible:

Valve recommends Ubuntu linux on their About page if you just go to main steam site:
http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Valve announced SteamOS which is based on linux. Notice the following pieces of text in particular:
"SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux" and "In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing"
http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/
And finally, saving best for last... Gabe Newell gave a speech recently (you can see it on youtube) where he says that Linux is the future of gaming;
http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/16/valve-ceo-gabe-newell-says-linux-is-the-future-of-gaming-hints-at-steambox-announcement/
Putting all of this together, what do you think Valve thinks about Windows 8 and what OS do you think Newell plays on ? Id venture to say that its probably not windows 8.
Linux is becoming extremely popular among those who are not technically challenged.
Google employees use Ubuntu:
http://www.techdrivein.com/2012/08/google-not-only-uses-ubuntu-variant-it.html
Also, China just announced Ubuntu will now be their official operating system:
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/03/ubuntu-to-become-the-official-os-of-china
Ubuntu is free, efficient, and secure. That last part is extremely important... Not only because that means you can compute in confidence knowing your credit card information isnt being stolen, but also because it means on linux you do not need an antivirus. Antiviruses on windows slow down those machines considerably. You dont have to deal with that as a linux user.

If we see a shift towards linux gaming it would benefit everyone (Except of microsoft). Linux is free so when you build a new rig, you would never have to pay for an operating system again, which can allow you to spend that money on hardware instead. What is the point of paying money for a clunky virus riddled OS when you can get a better product free? All we need is wider adoption, and the software will come.
Hope that gets my point across.
Game on!
And just another guy got fooled by PR.
I can tell from my own experience (15+ years of working with Unix and Linux) that these operation systems are as save from viruses rootkits and theft of data as all others and that is NOT AT ALL!
The only reason why Unix/Linux installations seems to be save is that the number of Windows installations is so much larger and thus it's way easier to break into those. OSX (which is Unix-based) was also considered save once but now it's just the same as with Windows. When real hackers try to break into Unix/Linux systems they will succeed.
The security stuff was just extra. Also, while I dont deny that what you are saying can easily be true (regarding the platform becoming more popular and therefore more attacked)... that is not the case right now is it?
So what i posted is true for the current situation. There is very little malware for tux at the moment.
Linux users benefit from a form of reverse-herd immunity: they're protected so long as only a select few use their operating system.
I think this article is interesting:
http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Why-Linux-Will-Never-Suffer-From-Viruses-Like-Windows/
If you are too lazy to read here is the conclusion;
"So, the conclusion is obvious: Even if they had the exact same market share, it is extremely unlikely that Linux would ever have the same number of exploits as we see in closed-source ecosystems such as Windows. This is a direct result of the open nature, which allows for innumerable companies and hobbyists to access and maintain all portions of the system--a feature that simply can't be replicated in proprietary operating systems. Linux will always have more eyes looking through the code to make it secure, than there are eyes looking through the code to exploit it."
And this conclusion seems logical with what has been happening.... There was a malicious exploit in the past few years for whatever distro i was running at the time... It was noticed and patched within a ridiculously short amount of time (i cant exactly but i think it was a few hours).
So yeah... Its not the same.
Good thing I can think for myself instead of acting like a mindless follower of Gaben. I have no problems running any games on Windows 8 yet.
