not a good idea. put a rogue in the back and if you want him in melee upgrade one of his stats so that he can hit enemies in the back row with daggars.

so prime set up would be 2 fighters in front, a roug and a mage in back

One of the skills they have will unlock the ability to strike from the back. I'm pretty sure it's early in the assassination set. Till then, just have them throw rocks and knives.

A rogue with a dodge build has greater survival then a fighter while still doing more damage. Unarmed/Evasion build with max Dex and the countless +dodge items. Google it if you don't believe me.

Fighters suck because they didn't make armor nearly effective enough, this becomes painfully clear on harder settings.

edit: Prime setup is Rogue/Rogue front and Rogue/Rogue or Rogue/Mage back. If it where 2 rogues back row they'd be Archer/Thrown with Maxed out Strength, one being a Minotaur for skull collection. Why Strength? Because Dex has no impact on damage.

when I played and beat the game I just had 4 mage types so I can't really say what is best to do with the rouges
