All outa torches
Hi,

I play the game real slow, to the point of almost all my torches have burned out.
What should I do if that happens? Is there an item with infinite light or something?

mage has a light spell (http://www.gamebanshee.com/legendofgrimrock/spells/spellcraft.php ) which requires some points into spellcraft tree.

also, a lot of boxes and sacks you'll find contain free torches.
lastly, if you "wasted" a torch by placing it on a wall to solve a puzzle - you can take it back once it's done it's job.

there is a secret room in the main hall of level 6 which is named 'Vault of the Orb'. ;)

There are no unlimited sources of food but don't afraid. I finished the game 5 mins ago with a whole box of Ice lizard Steaks that I kept from level 10 but didn't use, because THERE ARE TONS OF FOOD. I also played real slow, a complete walkthrough with all secrets and treasures found without guides took me 20 hours (at some point I decided to return to level 1 and start searching for missed secrets)

well the Orb Of Radiance is rather quickly replaced by the vastly-superior Zhandul's Orb, so I wouldn't count on it.
the Light and Darkness spells were what kept my party torchless since level 5 I think :)

I had two mages, so both orbs were in use.
There are two unlimited sources of food that I remember. One is on the same level as the first Ogre you meet. The snails on that floor respawn after some time passes. The other source is from a maze-like area, which is filled with lizards, in the latter part of the game. Like the snails, those lizards will keep respawning.
Even when you get the unlimited light spell it still pays to keep a few torches handy for puzzles and stuff.

While I'm posting, is there any advantage to not using a source of light? Does it make it easier to avoid detection or something? Only I can't really think of any reason to have the darkness spell otherwise...

darkness is needed for a specific puzzle (in level 7 I think), and it helps see enemies that glow in the dark (like fire guardians and the green blob things) to avoid running into nasty ambushes.
I don't think there is an element of stealth in this game. enemies detect you even if you have a party of 4 assassins and stay in the shadows.
The main reason for not using a torch is that it takes up a slot in your hand where you could use a weapon (throwing weapon or spear) or a shield for protection. The easiest way to give up torches is to learn the Light spell (requires lvl 5 in Spellcraft). To cast it click positions 8 and 5 on your spell pad (if you look at it the same as the numeric keypad on your keyboard)!
