Negative stats?

I picked up a Heavy Armor helm that gives -10 evasion without heavy armor specialization. When I equip it to one of my companion that has 0 base evasion, he ends up with -10. Does this actually affect his evasion at all? Or does it basically mean that I don't have to worry about the -10 debuff?

Maybe it translates to 10 points more accuracy of the attacker with regard to that character.

Evasion going negative does increase the chance of an attackers melee attacks to hit.

If your evasion is that low to begin with, you will probably be hit a lot anyway and you should probably wear the heavy armor.
