Party composition for second playthrough
I just finished Legend of Grimrock and it's fantastic. Definitely one of better games I've played. It's so good I'm already planning my second playthrough. I also want all achievements except maybe the one about finishing the game without the map. That's way too tough.

Anyway, my first party was:

Human fighter - swords and armors
Human rogue - daggers and dodge
Insectoid mage - Fire magic and spellcraft
Insectoid mage - Ice magic and spellcraft

All 4 characters had about 2:1 to 3:2 ratio of primary and secondary skills. Fighter and rogue had skilled and evasive, mages had skilled and strong mind.

For second playthrough I want less magic and I'll probably go with 1 mage using air magic because it seems fun and powerful. I want to keep the fighter, but I can't decide if I should go for swords again or switch it up for axes or maces, just to do something different.

As for rogues, the one in the front will probably use unarmed because I've read it's very potent. Is it? The one in the back will be using missile weapons because I don't really like assassination, getting behind the enemy seems like a hassle.

Anyone got other suggestions?

4 minotaur ranged characters
all day long
Since ranged damage is 100% chance to hit, and ranged dmg scales off of strength, minotaurs make fantastic ranged fighters. Combine that with your increased health, increased regeneration, and increased carry capacity, and you have an unstoppable party. The only problem is collecting enough stuff to throw at enemies to keep them all stocked on ammo.
Though I guess if you want 100% completion, then you'll want at least 1 mage who can cast fireball.

I love how much you can experiment with your party, you can play with anything. Try 4 mages :) Anyway, I had a lot of fun making my second party, weighing pros and cons. It was made of:

Front Row:

1. Unarmed minotaur, Fist Fighter + Skulls, main mule of the party.
2.Lizardman rogue, Evasion + Unarmed or Minotaur using maces.

Back Row:

1. Minotaur archer, maxed str with aggressive and skilled
2. Insectoid mage using fire magic and few points in spellcraft for wands.

P.S The second row archer can be replaced by another lizardman rogue with daggers or a mage using ice magic.

CroQ: That sounds fun, though I'd like to try out air magic, I've had enough of fire and ice and I think earth is boring.
