Having had 'beaten the dragon' 60 times over the course of the last run (getting a +5 tome on every character and a few augments of endless night)...and running it at ranges from level 4 through 25... while also having ran a few raids (just GH/Lailat/Shroud really) I'm not sure I agree with 'zomg mabar maek it unpossibru!'. Sure it gave lag, and sometimes it just totally locked you.. but it wasn't a fail even a fifth of the time from my expereience, and for only two weeks out of the year? meeeeh.
Variation on your idea would be a simple queue...have the instances created 5 at a time, with a minute before another 5 are created. With the 10 minute 'prep time', this would allow 50 instances created before even the first dragon fight starts, but with the actual fighting staggered out. With most of the actual dragon fights seemingly taking under 4 minutes, half the groups would have finished before the other half even started...effectively at least halving the lag from 'gargoyles seeking lever/altar'.
Of course this would require ddo to develope a queuing system.
---
This however would bar people from leaving/hopping instances, and wouldn't allow all of the instances to be filled completely.
Instead maybe, as the timer ticks down to 0 and the doors lock... have the instances start staggered. At the one minute mark, 'lock in' a delay and inform the occupents: "The ritual has started, the dragon will appear in x minutes".
This way the groups that have to wait an additional 5 minutes know to delay their buffing up. It would also remove the need for an elaborate queuing system, just a script that addes a time padding.
Afterall, it's not the instances themselves that lag you: even on a doomed run, you're still fine UNTIL the dragon/gargoyles start.
Granted. But the scale of the lag is such that even if over half of the people fit into one of the several level ranges, it would still greatly reduce the number of simultaneous instances. Of course, from where we're sitting it's rather hard to say how much difference would be required to fix the lag. Even so, the trick to getting a non-laggy instance over the last 2 years was to wait to enter for as little as a minute or two after the major crowd (i.e. door open). That suggests that reducing the number of simultaneous instances even slightly might have a major positive impact.
May all their houses be egged this year.
Suppostion: Sounds like the raidish finale is gone, be farming in delara for items to enter the faux challenges. Combination Cove (get compasses outside, earn mats in dungeon) with Cannith (enter at will).
Well, there you have it.
"We know you spent hours and days and slogged through laggy raids as you rushed for items. We know we suddenly cut the event off early screwing you out of turnins even if ready. And yes, we did suggest hanging on to the ingrediants for the future. We know a large portion of you are upset.
But we're Turbine, and we don't give a damn about pissing off our diminishing userbase. Here, have another event, more items to take up space. We're sure you'll love grinding this out too, and are pretty sure we won't screw you over on this one as well. Maybe. At least not Soon™"
*shrug* oh well, just means not buying points/packs this season. I'll wait until 70% off sale or such, and in the interim give my money to a company that understands loyalty.
*nods* That's why green dragon scales and greensteel crafting items and winter festival motes and such were all removed, because of duping. O wai! They weren't.
"Duping changed everything" <-- the new excuse for anything and everything
Best part is, even if someone did dupe 2312323 million motes...they also likely have alrady gotten everything they wanted. Damage (if any) is done. It isn't like there is competative leaderboards where we 'win' against each other. If they put those motes up on the Astral Shard, the tax on them would make a profit for Turbine. If they put them up on normal AH, well, isn't like there hasn't been a huge platinum glut for forever.
The only negative possible would be someone could buy motes, use them for event items, and not have to run the event this year. Oh noe! A hampster did escape the wheel! Quick, ruin the work of others, we must keep them grinding the circle!
My only question is if they believe their own story, or just think we do. Personally favour the idea it's malice, because incompetance is just too plebian.

My only quibble is the loss of the dragon fight fun, since that was the best part in my opinion.
That guildies (and you other commoners :p ) can get the old items is of the good.
I'll be keeping my old mats and such 'cuz... I hoard, but I don't begrudge the removal. New system seems easier to accrue items, so the poor 'single mom with 3 kids and a full time job on sat internet that can only play an hour a week and kept failing dragon from lag' can get her Mabar cloak now.
Okay Turbine, you gets my monies. People can get the rewards, and an easier path makes up for lost progress for them. Plus this system would let you add (*cough*reskin) other quests to add more and more to the event - new mats from new dungeons for new items, and in amounts that make their 'fade after event ends' status moot.
Now to pick up the new pack because the only thing better than killing Carver, is getting to kill Carver over and over and over and over.. each death begining an exquisite agony anew~
...but can we get the druidic 'open locks' added in the upcoming pass? ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
EDIT: crudic? *blink* that was not Freud.
