Games like 'To The Moon'?
I cannot say anything about this game that hsn't been said already, it's just a little bit of wonderful. :) Excited to see there will be more episodes!

In the meantime though, it made me wonder if there are any other games like this, and I wonder if any of you might have any suggestions? Something that is story driven, not all about the graphics or gameplay. Visual novels would be okay too!

So, if someone loves 'To the Moon', what else might they like?

The biggest western release of 2012 is The Walking Dead. If you have a DS, the Phoenix Wright series, and Hotel Dusk/Last Window are also fantastic games. All these games favor story over gameplay for the most part.

Visual Novels wise, I suppose Katawa Shoujo is one of the easiest intros to the genre, so I recommend that one. If you like the genre, then there's a lot more out there.;fil=tagspoil-0;o=d;s=rating will be you friend.

Thank you very much Pikagrue! I do have a DS so I will look in to those games!

I have been interested in visual novels but did not know where to start. Sooo happy for that link! I just downloaded Katawa Shoujo. :)

I will just give you my list of every great DS story game.

-Phoenix Wright series (including Apollo Justice and Ace Attorney Investigations)
-Hotel Dusk and Last Window
-Radiant Historia
-The World Ends With You
-Ghost Trick
-999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
-Professor Layton Series
-Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 1/2

There might be a couple I missed.

If you have a PSP, stuff like Persona 3 Portable and FF7 Crisis Core are great.

If you happen to like Katawa Shoujo, then other VNs like Little Busters or Clannad might be to your tastes. If you're looking for something less romance based, then Fate Stay Night is a good starting point too. Something more mystery/horror based would be Higurashi no Naku Koro ni or Umineko no Naku Koro ni. (These are all massive 50+ hour endeavors though)

PS: there are animes of "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni or Umineko no Naku Koro ni" and "Fate Stay Night". I recommend "Umineko", but "fate stay night" is not really good (ugly drawings and anime's history and underdeveloped compared to the game) but the season 2 call "fate zero" is just awesome !!!!!! (not need to watch the first season to see the second).
Pikagrue Jan 10, 2013 @ 5:50pm
From what I've heard, the Umineko anime doesnt adapt it too well, but Higurashi is a phenomenal adaptation. (Also Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate Stay Night)

Woo, I wasn't expecting more suggestions, thank you!!

The only game from the list of DS games that I have played was the Professor Layton series, have enjoyed that one. The others look interesting too, especially 999 and Radiant Historia!

I am starting to wish I had a PS of some sort, have heard good things about Persona!

So far I am liking Katawa Shoujo. :) I have a stupid question if I haven't bothered you too much yet: I have already seen the Clannad anime (one of my favorites!), would the VN still be interesting to play though? You have absolutely made my day but telling me about Little Busters, I love Key's work! Must find this one asap!

I am usually not too keen on horror in anime but I did peek at Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. The story looks interesting and if it's not just one violent scene after another then I will give anything a try, or the VN. I do not mind if they are long hours, if it's a good story usually I do not want it to end, you know?

I really appreciate you both responding with all these great suggestions :)

Phoenix Wright is my absolute favorite DS series. It seems strange at first, but the stories are really well written, and the music fits perfectly. I got myself a used PSP 3000 for like ~60$, and hacking it is really easy nowadays.

If you've seen Clannad and Clannad AS, then you'll more or less know the story + true end. I haven't actually seen the anime, so I have no clue how much of the other paths actually got adapted, so if you happened to like the other girls then it'll probably be worth a play. Key also has another VN called Rewrite. (It's their latest release). There's no English patch as of yet, but if you can read Chinese then it's already been translated.

Higurashi and Umineko are both known for exceptional stories. Higurashi has a lot more horror/violent elements (I'm guessing). Killer lolis isn't inaccurate to Higurashi. There's a lot of killings and death, but the storyline is solving the mystery behind all the strangeness, and the reason behind the events. Umineko isn't as scary (though I find some parts kinda creepy), and is much more metafiction/mystery based.

Yeah at first glance Phoenix Wright looked a bit silly but if you say the stories are good I will give it a try also! So many games to get now. :) *dusts off the DS*

You've never watched Clannad?! It is so good! I guess I won't play through the VN then, I couldn't imagine any other ending than the 'true' one, hehe.

I can't seem to find Little Busters to download it. :( At least a way that doesn't involve 17 steps. Oh well, perhaps the anime will get an English cast eventually! (I try to watch subs but usually have a hard time reading and seeing the action on the screen).

Alright it's the story and characterizations that matter most to me so I'll add Higurashi and Umineko to the 'to watch' list, :) They all seem to be rated top notch on that vndb, along with Fate/stay night. Yay!

Ever17 looks kind of good, too?
NicTac Jan 11, 2013 @ 5:50pm
No one suggested Narcissu yet? Its a VN like most of the suggestions. Check it out. It has a nice little story to tell. And since people are suggesting anime too, I recommend Anohana. Its currently subbed but might get dubbed in the future.
Pikagrue Jan 11, 2013 @ 11:24pm
The starting cases in the Phoenix Wright series usually aren't that strong, but the final cases are absolutely amazing.

From what I've heard, only two of the paths are actually adapted, so there's still a lot of content that was never actually in the anime...

Little Busters is probably most easily downloaded from here:

Just follow the instructions in the description (aka just download the English patch)

Higurashi and Umineko I estimate to be 100 hours each? At least according to VNDB. They're crazy long.

Ever17 is also considered fantastic. It's the same writer as 999 and Virtue's Last Reward.

If you have a PS3, I thought Heavy Rain was amazing. Normally stories about killers aren't my thing, but it really sucks you in because every decision you make changes the story and the ending.
Minnie Jan 13, 2013 @ 3:08am
No PS3 :(

Thank you for that link for Little Busters, had not seen that!

NicTac - thanks a lot for those two titles!! Anohana looks so good I want to try watching it subbed hehe.
NicTac Jan 13, 2013 @ 11:44pm
Doo it. Part of what I liked about To the Moon was the music. I think both of those titles put music to good use.
Minnie Jan 14, 2013 @ 6:30pm
Me too! The music was a big part of what made it so great to me.

Pikagrue was right on with The Walking Dead, especially if you want a PC game. It's pretty much all story. Great characters, and lots of plot twists to keep it interesting.
