? Abandonware ?
Am I missing something or did this game go from "unbelievable potential" pre launch to "neat game with novel mechanics but unchallenging level design" to complete abandonware?

The official site has dropped off the first page of google results for "gunpoint game official".

The last announcement on here is dated August 5th and mirrors the last blog post.

I have no issues with the Dev team cashing in and walking off into the sunset as long as they're up front about it and maybe even pass on the project to interested parties.

I am still waiting on the games native linux version that I heavily implied priot to launch and was the basis of my purchase.

This is primarily the work of one person (Tom Francis). He dreamed up the concept and built the mechanics of the game. Whilst there were additional contributors for the music and graphics, it was largely a solo effort. As a result it's a lot of work for one person to perform bug fixes on the released product as well as develop the game for other platforms. This is not, in any way, shape or form, Abandonware - in fact, you're not even using the term correctly in the context of this game.

I'm aware it was pretty much a one-man-army project but you don't need to employ a PR team to update a website or post to a dev blog.
Didn't Notch do the same with Minecraft and build it up into a proper dev studio?
Updates remind people your game is out there, just look at TF2

Considering Tom was a game reviewer, he's probably more aware than most about how important engaging with the community is.

I'm just trying to be emotive with my title but considering the following, I don't see how it's such a push to claim it as abandonware.
  • website seems to have been abandoned shortly after launch to the extent that it's dropped off google's first page when searching for it.
  • no patches since shortly after launch.
  • no progress updates for months.

I don't want to tempt fate...

For example: a simple user voted community update with best X custom maps would highlight the mod scene, and give websites an excuse to begin chattering about the game again.
This wouldn't seriously detract from any development work while getting valuable feedback about what aspects of the game the userbase are most attached to.

Send him an e-mail or tweet.
I'm also wanting more from this game that I finished so quickly.

Gosh, comparing the sales of this game to Minecraft and TF2... just... argh.

Leave him alone. He'll work on this game eventually. I won't buy it since it's completely unplayable for me, I need rebinding support or XBOX 360 controller support.

Abandonware, which is illegal BTW, means software that's been abandoned for 10 years or more.

There's nothing wrong with a developer saying that a game is finished, complete done. I enjoyed gunpoint, is that not enough?!

I was surprised it ended so quickly but then immediately said "yeah...that was well worth it.

Did he say it was done?
The official site still makes mention of a mac/gnu port.
That said, his personal twitter does rave about a new project.
I would just appreciate a proper update, I understand you can be arrested for saying the wrong thing on twitter but I didn't notice the transition to it being the proper place for a press release.
It wasn't quite as hard as I thought it would be but it was great fun and I loved it. Wouldn't call it "cashing in", I would call it "deserved pay for a job well done", but your millage may vary. It's also not really abandonware since it's still commercially available. I don't see the need for a lot of announcements and patches, considering the game is running fine - or at least that's my experience
The word "entitled" is overused these days but I think it fits in this case. The game is written, finished, published. Why must it have ongoing support? It's not an mmo; you're not paying a subscription for it. You bought it, you got it.

Calling this game abandonware is a straight up insult. It works, it's available to purchase for a reasonable price, there's a level editor included. This game is no more abandonware than Doom or Morrowind.

And the word entitled is overused these says because more and more of us have lost all patience with the attitude it describes.

"I gave you ten dollars, so you're my ♥♥♥♥♥ for life. Or five years. Whichever passes first."

So Google is the prime way to tell if something is being worked on? It sorts by a set of values that have nothing to do with what the intend meaning for the words you put in are. A while ago someone did something so that pancakes give a return about something (I forget what) that had nothing to do with them. Also total failure returned links to G.W. Bush.

if this game confirmed new content or workshop for like level editor i would buy ... but since it doesn't warrant me that i think il pass

unless there a sweet site and community bringing level hence why workshop would be the best approach
