A couple of "small" suggestions for the editor: or, How amazing it would be if this game were Knytt Stories
Yes, i did
just give this thread two titles. What are you planning to do about it?
Anyways, here's the thing: With creations made in the level editor being shareable on the Workshop now, Gunpoint is IMO in need of a level editor.
So i decided to put in my two cents on my opinion of what i think about my viewpoint on what could potentially make the level editor roughly 413.612 times more awesome. I'm not really counting on this actually happening (officially or through a mod), but i don't care, this is just a rant for the sake of a rant, mainly to compare notes with my fellow Gunpoint players.
Let's just begin, shall we: All the PointEdit stuff. All of it.
Even the things it doesn't have yet but perhaps one day might. PointEdit exists for a reason. I don't really get how the official level editor can even be worthwhile without the things PointEdit has that the canon editor doesn't. Maybe you could even promote the PointEdit dev to... uh... first-name basis i guess? Custom graphics for all!
The difference between Gunpoint and a game like, say, Portal 2, is the fact that custom graphics can potentially be used (and used well) by most, if not all users, including the "Look, mom, i made a Gunpoint level!" people. Oh, and the fact that there's an actual reason why Conway wouldn't keep robbing Rooke, DataSec, and Intex for all eternity. Custom tiles, backgrounds, objectives, and even Conways, can potentially be done with a "poot image file here" prompt to replace a certain sprite with a certain other sprite. I'd limit this to anyting that isn't a guard or electronic, though. And while we're on the subject of custom stuff: Custom music as well.
Just plonk in both the option to change to any in-game song, and a way to stick one or two (the second one is for Crosslink mode) mp3s into the level. Dialogue trees (and all the related stuff) and custom laptop messages.
With custom caller IDs and Conways of course. The levels and laptops seem rather bland without them, to be honest. And it's reasonable in-universe: Conway is a freelance spy person, and the Selena thing is in the past entirely. It could also be a nice idea to have the "objective" stated at the level select screen, like with the main game. I actually know of one level that could greaty benefit from this option. Custom in-level cutscenes.
You know, like that call with Selena? Or when you listened in on that conversation? Or when Gessler knocked a door into your face and insulted your hat
? That. In custom levels. And don't worry: The feature will be complicated enough to keep first-timers from spamming the hell out of it and ruining gameplay, while still being easy-to-use enough for competent people who can actually use it. Choosing which powerups the player has.
Gatecrashers are OP. Also, if this becomes a thing, inform the player of which powerups they have. Also, upgrade levels could be limited, for when a level relies on limited resources. Not having to place objects over other objects to determine the circuits.
It's kinda tedious, really. And i don't see why you wouldn't simply have a button labeled "place this on the circuit that's purple with green and red polka dots" to press which changes the circuit color of whatever electronic you are about to place. Rectangle fill area thingy for zones.
To make them easier to use and stuff.
If anything else crosses my mind, i'll put it here. Feel free to criticize and add your own improvements; that's what this thread's here for. (And also, i know there's a thread for this already, but i see my suggestions as "exceptional", because they deal with customization a bit more than with fixes and improvements (even though those are here as well).)
