I just played a minute ago with a controller, it is kinda wonky, but it works. I noticed you do have to be moving/aiming the right stick for RT to shoot, however.
Aham, nice, this explains everything, thank you for your discovery. I don't like using gamepad in Hell Yeah then, K/M is so convenient and you can shoot while jumping too. I used gamepad just in a few Virtual Rabbit missions, those you just jump without a gun). But considering that I bought two gamepads because of this game, it's quite sad :)) One of them will definitely come handy in racing games though, like Burnout...
Detnom already provided the detail of how that configuration works:
You use the right analog stick to aim your gun and in doing so it switches the action of the right trigger from digging to shooting. When you release the right analog stick the trigger button returns to a digging action.
