I've had this happen a couple times and it was the dog knot in the cable loose. Check the first link next to the USB port plug. Unplug it and plug it back in, that may be the trick.
ye ive tried that already it still doesnt work, but thanks for the suggestion.

I'll try. I certainly can't guarantee anything though ...

a) Try this and note anything "peculiar" about how your computer responds: 1. Reboot your computer; 2. Plug the cable into a USB port; 3. Start Steam; 4. Start Rocksmith. Did anything happen? Is Rocksmith working or not?

b) Next, I need some basic info ...
1. What version of Windows are you using?
2. What kind of guitar are you using (electric/acoustic/semi-acoustic)?
3. Is the Tone Cable attached directly to your computer or through a USB hub?
4. Is the cable attached directly to your guitar or is there something in between (an amp, a patch cord, etc.)
5. Does the cable look like it has been pierced or run over by an office chair?
6. Does your guitar have live or passive pickups?
7. If I asked you to look at Windows "Device Manager", do you know what that is or should I quickly write some clear directions?

I got this the first time I started the game, where I had to unplug and plug the cable 3 or 4 times, then it worked fine from then on.

I bet it is just something easy to overlook. On my first time I forgot to un-mute Windows microphone settings.

rocksmith is working perfectly nothing of what you said happens.

1. windows 7
2.acoustic
3.through a usb hub
4.directly to guitar
5.no
6.live
7.no i dont know what it is
thank you in advance.
My guess is that the USB hub is causing the problem. Try connecting directly to your PC.
If that fails:
Right click your sound icon in the tray and select "Recording devices" (not sure about the name, I have a localized windows). Usually there's only the default microphone and Stereo Mix. After plugging the cable, it should show as another device. If you strum your guitar with this window open, the bar on the right should show that it's getting input signal.
Hi olberick, :)

a) Try Pirate's idea first--plug the guitar directly into the computer and *not* through a hub.
b) Check the battery in you guitar to make sure your pickups are sending information to the computer.

One further question: your guitar is acoustic--is the jack socket where you insert the Tone Cable installed as part of the guitar or do you have a microphone or acoustic pickup that you need to attach to the guitar (and then attach the tone cable to the mic or pickup)?

I cant plug plug the guitar directly into the computer and not through a usb hub because i do not have the output in my computer, since it is a laptop.

Yes my guitar is acoustic, and my jack socket where i insert the tone cable is installed as part of the guitar.

You might need to ask UbiSoft Support to see if they know of hubs being a problem and if they have found a solution.

I have a laptop, too, and this is what I have done. Since Rocksmith only needs the Tone Cable and keyboard keys while I am playing, I plug the Cable into one computer USB port, and in the other port I plug in a keyboard that has a USB hub in it. (I move the mouse and any other USB things to a port on the keyboard or another hub.)

I plug my speakers into the headphone port. If you have USB speakers, do they work through your hub?

olberick, do you have a file called "RocksmithConfiguration.pdf" installed on your computer?
It was probably installed in this directory:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Rocksmith`

If you open that pdf to page 12 or 13 there should be method describing how to access Windows' Device Manager, and then it describes how to check if your laptop's USB ports are configued properly.

If you can't find that pdf or can't understand it I will try to figure out something different if you have not heard from UbiSoft suppot by then.
