So... have you used the activation key?

Activate it on Steam

They've essentially already said it, but it's worth both clarifying and bumping since I had the same issue (and same "oh wait duh" moment). You do not need to be in game to activate the game. As much sense as "putting in the disk to install the game" sounds, you need to use the activation key before the full game will unlock on your account.

On the toolbar, click "Games". Then click "Activate a Product on Steam." Type in your activation code there, and the full game will unlock on your account.

You may now feel as stupid as I did for not thinking of that sooner.

I encountered something similar here. I bought a new copy of RS1 and it only installs the demo version. When I put in the activation code, it installs RS2014!! Very weird.... Sounds like I might have gotten a counterfeit version from Ebay - nothing about the packaging looks suspicious.

Same here for me: DVD only install demo and if I want to enter CD Key on steam, it want to install Rocksmith 2014 (wich I already have) instead of Rocksmith...

***Useless information removed from poster***

Here is the text taken from the interview of the development team making this decision:

"On why the publisher chose the name Rocksmith 2014 as opposed to Rocksmith 2, senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key explained it was to encourage those who had not played the first game yet to buy and play the second one, without needing to invest in a previous installment of the franchise. He compared it to foreign language learning courses: "This is not the second step in guitar playing. Some people might interpret it that way. If you see Spanish 1 and then Spanish 2, you think that you need to learn Spanish 1 first." He described Rocksmith 2014 as a "replacement" for the original game rather than a sequel, and argued that its new songs, modes and improvements justified the purchase for people who had already bought the original Rocksmith"

All Keys included in Rocksmith are now directly associated with Rocksmith 2014, Believe me, it makes my day a damn hassle answering this question for a e-bay and amazon seller -.-
Simplicity: You want Rocksmith 2014? buy it, you want Rocksmith? Follow 905's advise. He seen it once.

Hope it helps

Wow, that is complete disinformation. People want RS 1 to be able to get the DLC and on DISK songs from RS1.

I suspect UBI had a problem with production and sent out RS 1 disks with the wrong activation keys. I saw where somone contacted UBI in another thread and sent proof of purchase and a picture of the Game and activation code and UBI sent them a RS 1 key.

Don't listen to this guys BS, he has no idea what he is talking about.
