Just FYI, for Rebellion everyone has the steam version as it's a steamworks game, and the "Show Mod Path" on the mods tab of the option is the path you should always put it in, no matter what anyone else says. But for 99% of people it's the path AzureAlliance listed.

I've tried E4X, SOA2, and SOTF. None of them appeal. E4X adds complexity to a complex game, SOA2 is imba, and SOTF's universe (Battlestar Galactica) doesn't interest me. There are other mods out there besides these.

IMO SOTF is the best of the 3, but they're just mods. The best version of Sins has a checksum of 0, with 5 types of colonization to research (unmodded Sins with DLC).

Well as creator of E4X and friends with the modders on the other teams, I may be biased. But it seems odd to comment on mod recommendations and say none of them are really worth it. Different mods are for different people and I understand that, but clearly if he's asking about what mods to get it's something he thinks he will like. Saying none of them were for you doesn't really help him.

But some quick recommendations in a nutshell

Enhanced 4X (E4X) - Yes as the name implies it tries to make Sins more like a true RTS-4X hybrid, and as 4X games are more complicated than strategy games, it is not a good choice if you think Sins is complicated enough (though honestly no mod really tries to make the game simplier). But it is probably the mod that has tried the hardest to flesh out and make new game mechanics, especially on the non-combat side such as more diversified economies and better diplomacy. Yet even RTS focused players will probably appreciate things like more, balanced planets, random encounters and hero units, and is probably the main mod for players who want more content without necessarily new races.

Similar Mods: Distant Stars, though it seems this classic is having some difficulties switching to Rebellion, as several of their dev team members refused to update due to Rebellion requiring steam.

Sins of the Fallen(SOTF)/Fall of Kobol: A rather expansive mod with all sorts of customizations available, it is one of the main mods that adds new factions while keeping the old ones. Some like the organic Plague and cyborg Hypercorp are the author's originals, while Fall of Kobol is the main Battlestar Galactica mod. Basically if you ever wanted a Sins expansion that added a 4th race, this family of mods is for you.

Similar Mods: Maelstrom was an amazing mod in this category, with several original races added to the old ones as well as some other very high quality content. However sadly I haven't tried the Rebellion version yet, so I can't recommend it as much. The main problem then was only that the new races were more powerful than the vanilla ones. E4X will also soon be getting a Star Wars addon called Interregnum, which will put E4X in this catagory.

These next mods are total conversions, meaning the Sins races are removed and replace with new ones, usually based on popular science fiction franchises.

Sins of a Galactic Empire: A mod for big Star Wars buffs, it has 6 races from the clone wars to the expanded universe. It can be a bit crude in a few places but is more than finished enough to give a good time, and perhaps has the largest battles of any mod. Will especially appeal to fans who follow Star Wars beyond the movies and want a mod to stick as close to Star Wars canon as possible.

Sacrafice of Angels 2: The only currently released Star Trek mod, I haven't played this one in Rebellion either since I'm not much of a trekie. But if you need a photon torpedo fix give this one ago, and their Borg race is pretty interesting if you like making alliances agianst a single extremely powerful enemy.

Stargate Invasion: Again I've only seen the Stargate movie, never played this mod but its available if you like the IP.

Careful the Borg in that mod reflects their cannon power as in they're really tough and powerful.

I played a 4v2 like that on Easy with all the non-Borg helping me as KDF. The 2 won. SOA2 is that imba.

The mod team views that as a feature, if you don't want that kind of challenge don't play against the Borg. Also, normal AIs are often pretty useless anyways. :p
