Infested Planet is a real-time strategy game with a tug-of-war play style & take-and-hold objectives. Science fiction themed, the game takes place on a new planet that is being colonized by space fairing humans who encounter another sentient form of life on the planet.
The Good: This was the best example of an indie RTS I've ever seen! It is almost impossible to compete the complexity (and the limitless budget) of games like StarCraft or Company of Heroes but this little indie title did an excellent job of giving us a simplified and streamlined RTS that didn’t "simplify" the fun out of playing the game. There a light research tree, single mission unlocks for the extra tough missions, a weekly challenge for those who want more and just enough story and music to be fun but not get in the way. The units seemed balanced and everything you unlock (almost) has a purpose and is useful in the right situation. The game is also delightfully challenging; it’s by no means a push over but you’ll lose a few mission before ya get it right!
The Bad: At least for me, the chopper air-strike and the ammo facility combo seemed really (Really!) good, that may need a small nerf but really you have to use it at an opportune time or the bugs just swarm back over the area. Also, and this is always a sideways compliment, the game was a bit too short. I beat it and all of the (non-weekly) side skirmishes in ~14 hours but hey, there's always endless/challenge mode if ya want more.
The Funny: Nothing really ... all action and fun, no bugs, nothing crashed. I was too busy kicking ♥♥♥ to laugh!
Summary: 9 out of 10, this is everything an indie game should be. It didn't try to say, "We're better than AAA titles," (nor did it price itself as such). It just brought a fun, action packed arena in a familiar but still unique package. At the time of this writing the game is ~4 bucks and since most movies cost ya $18ish for 1.5 - 2 hours of entertainment I'd take a game like this over any movie night. This game is great and I'll definitely buy from this group if they put out more stuff. The game is Infested Planet: Get it, Play it, Love it!
