For the easiest and most trouble-free controller experience, we definitely recommend supported controllers with native drivers plugged directly into the USB port, where possible. :)

I got a very similar problem. I play with a wireless Xbox 360 controller, and no gamepad "emulator".
First, the game skips all first screens very quickly. Then, when I start a game, I automatically have a second player. If I press "Esc" on the keyboard, the second character leaves and comes back directly... but I cannot "confirm".
So it looks like my keyboard keeps "enter" pressed when I launch the game or something like that.
When I try the "all you can eat" mode, there is a second player (p4).
Enoying, because I can't launch the game... ;)
