[Issue Resolved] Game crashing immediately at start
Hello,
I tried playing the Bridge today after downloading it. However, after doing the first time setup, nothing shows. After a couple of seconds, steams starts the 'todays news' as if I have been playing a game and exited it myself.

After browsing trough these forums I did a reinstal of the game itself and of the XNA framework and of the .net framework. I have also checked the XNA user control restrictions. Still have the same issue however. I found 2 event log errors after 1 game run:

First one says source: Application error, and the second (bottom one): .NET runtime

So to be clear, I doubleclick the game executable or doubleclick it in my steam library, I very briefly see a 'Preparing to launch' screen (0.2 seconds or so), and then nothing, just the steam library and no game. Then steam opens the 'today on steam' window. I have windows7 x64, although steam runs in *32 it seems.

Help please! :)

Hi Endurin,

Thanks for providing so much detail! The game installed fine on your computer, and this appears to be an issue with is happening when the game loads up, attempting to set the default sound volume. I've never seen this exact error before, but as it's related to either XNA or your computer's audio, I'd try the following:

* Make sure all of your Windows Updates and especially your audio driver updates are up-to-date (then restart your computer and try again).
* Make sure you have Windows Media Player installed on your computer.
* If the above two steps don't work, it may be a problem with XNA. You can try going to Control Panel, selecting "Uninstall a Program", then uninstall "Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0". Afterwards, manually install it from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20914 and restart your computer before trying again.

Do any of these three options fix things?

Hey, thanks for the quick response.
I already un- and reinstalled the XNA after I read other topics (mentioned above ^^). WMP is installed and I just ran a music video on it, works fine. (version: 12.0.7601.17514)
I recently (~month ago) ran into an issue with sword of the stars 2 not running my audio, and completely reinstalled them.
Also, just did a check on my audio drivers, windows reporting 'best drivers installed'. Microsoft High Definition Audio Device, driver version 6.1.7601.17514, dating from 19/11/2010.

So, still not working, same problem as before.
The program shows briefly in my running programs before disappearing without ever showing the game.. whats next? :)
Thx
Ty_Taylor  [developer] Aug 13, 2013 @ 10:54am
This is very strange then. Perhaps another program you have installed is conflicting with it causing the crash.

Just as a sanity check to make sure it's actually a problem with the XNA audio handling, if you run it again and look at the new .NET error log, do you see the line "Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Audio.SoundEffect.set_MasterVolume(Single)" anywhere in the new log? This will tell us if it's actually a problem with the audio or if the game is just crashing "randomly" and it happened to be that spot before.

Thanks!

Yeap.

I am currently trying to replace the standard windows audio drivers with the ones from my motherboard manufacturer (asrock-realtek audio), rebooting after this message (just installed them)..

Nope :(

Just to confirm that this is not an isolated incident, I have the same problem, but a different error message related to graphics drivers:

Application: The Bridge.exe

Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.TypeInitializationException

One odd fact however: I got the game to run, once. No idea how.

In the future I will try running the game on different pc's, but I haven't got the chance to do that right away.

Thanks for your time and please help!

It is striking though that this problem occurred just now and it didn't with the introduction of the game. Did something change in the code?

This is really bizarre that it's happening on multiple computers, there hasn't been a game update released in months.

The game is using Steam's provided XNA prerequisite. It's entirely possible that Valve changed that recently, which could cause the issue. Another note is that the installer link I provided above was for the "developer" version of XNA, but there's a better version that can be used. After installing The Bridge, you should try the following manually:

* Go to Control Panel, select "Uninstall a Program", then do a search in the search box for "XNA". Uninstall everything with XNA in the name, then restart your computer. After rebooting, install this version of XNA which is different from the link I posted above: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24872

Does this help?
Laguna Aug 13, 2013 @ 1:39pm
I am running .NET 4.5 atm, so your 4.0 just won't install. Without XNA as seperate install, the error looks like this:

Could it be a problem with the 4.5 version of .NET?
Ty_Taylor  [developer] Aug 13, 2013 @ 3:18pm
It couldn't hurt, but my understanding is that .NET 4.0 and 4.5 could co-exist on your computer. It wouldn't hurt to try uninstalling all of the .NET and XNA you have on your computer and re-installing prerequisites for the game (.NET 4.0 client profile and XNA 4.0 Redistributable client profile). Something is causing a conflict.
Laguna Aug 13, 2013 @ 4:04pm
After deinstalling all components and reinstalling .NET 4.0 and XNA 4.0 the exception still comes up. Points at Microsoft.Xna.Framework as before.
Could you reproduce the exception with this setup?
Ty_Taylor  [developer] Aug 13, 2013 @ 7:45pm
I've been unable to reproduce this issue. I've been offering suggestions that make sense given the error reports, but I've never seen this happen before. Are you using an old operating system? Only Windows XP, 7, Vista, and 8 are supported.

This is only happening with a few people, and I've verified that nothing has been changed with the installer in the past few months, so this is likely caused by some kind of weird conflicts of what you have installed on your computer. Unless I knew all of the programs and drivers installed on your computer I wouldn't be able to offer any suggestion, and unfortunately even if I did I would be guessing.

It's a bit of a long shot, but after uninstalling everything on your computer through Control Panel with ".NET" or "XNA" in the name (using the search bar found in the Programs and Features list), you could try to delete the game content folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\TheBridge", make sure Windows is fully updated, and restart your computer, and try to install everything through the Steam client again (without installing the prerequisites manually). This wouldn't fix it if there's another non-.NET or non-XNA program installed that's causing a conflict unfortunately--have you tried playing any other XNA game?
Endurin Aug 14, 2013 @ 2:52am
Hey,
I just tried what you suggested. There is nothing with .net or xna remaining in my installed programs. Removed the bridge folder and let steam re-download it.

However, it does not install XNA or .NET now. Steam just tried to start the game, without doing a first-time-setup.
Starting the Bridge just shows the brief starting window before it stops again. No error messages in the Event Viewer either.. I guess I will try and reinstal .net and xma myself now.

Running windows7 64bit btw.
