This game was fantastic, but they didn't need to slap the Max Payne name onto it. I think I payed $10 on a sale for this and that was worth the price of admission.
From start to finish this game plays out like an epic action movie. There's a ton of cut scenes and a lot of times where you will have no control of action. If you can get past that you will enjoy this thrill ride. The day of this post there were no issues logging into Rockstar Social Club. I had no problems linking to my account that was already created. That said, you still won't be able to play multiplayer as the servers are shut down.
What gets me is that this is not a Max Payne game. There is no "Noire" elements to the game unless you want to include an almost horror like twist towards the end. The only thing that makes this "Max Payne" is the incredible, sarcastic narration from the main character which is top notch the whole way through. One other thing that took me out of the game is how you will grab a gun and get the ammo for it only to have it disappear after the next cut scene is over. Also the difficulty (played on normal mode) ramps up a ton in the last few chapters and will leave you wondering what you did wrong. Other then that, WHOA!
First off, the soundtrack is absolutely incredible. Beyond that the sound design is brilliant. On a not so great 2.1 setup I was able to determine locations based on sound. Not something I'm used to and don't really think about. The club scene is a brilliant example of this. As you move through the club the music that is playing is filtered so well for the environment you are in at the time it really feels like you are there. Also the graphics even on my modest setup made me go WOW more than a few times.
The gunplay..... OH the gunplay. So rewarding. But not once was I tempted to use dual wielding, a Max Payne staple. The bullet time effects are top notch, exactly what you would expect from the game the coined the term. The story is actually pretty good. Right up there with a big budget Hollywood action flick. Also Max will bring a smile to your face in the gravest of situations with his special brand of narrative, and that will keep you coming back for more.
- Overall GREAT game
-AMAZING soundtrack that keeps you immersed
- Tight gun play
- Rewarding story
- Multiplayer servers are offline (NO MULTIPLAYER)
- No "Noire" aspect to the game
- Disappearing guns
- Difficulty curve is VERY HIGH at the end
- Lots of cut scenes, some you can't skip
Sound: 6/5 (No Joke)
Overall 4.5/5 and about 11 hours to complete.
If you're looking for an old school throwback to MP 1 and 2 you may be disappointed but there are moments that will take you back. If you're looking for a top tier, balls to the wall, action thrill ride grab this on a sale and sit back with some drinks and painkillers, because you're in for a wild ride.
