So I guess I'd become what they wanted me to be, a killer. Some rent-a-clown with a gun who puts holes in other bad guys. Well that's what they had paid for, so in the end that's what they got. Say what you want about Americans but we understand capitalism. You buy yourself a product and you get what you pay for.
Nine years after Max Payne 2, Max finds himself drinking away his sorrow after he got fired from the NYPD, for consorting with the criminal Mona Sax. He has developed a drinking problem and his addiction to painkillers has gotten worse. He has moved back to where he lived with his wife and daughter: Hoboken, New Jersey. Max gets into a confrontation with the son of the local mob boss Anthony Demarco. And an old friend who claims to have been on the police academy with Max, Raul Passos, finds him at the bar, hoping to recruit him for a private security job in South-America. Max resists, but after he kills the son of Anthony Demarco, he has no choice but to flee from his home.
Of all the three Max Payne games, Max Payne 3 has arguably the best gameplay of them all. The controls are very solid, and the gameplay can be very addictive. The good old bullet-time is back, and works mostly the same as it always has. Instead of being able to carry your whole arsenal with you, like in Max Payne 1 and 2, You can carry up to three weapons. Two small ones, and one big one. If you want to duel-wield your small weapons, you have to drop your big weapon. This is actually very fun in my opinion, this way you have to use every gun at least once. Max Payne 3 has fourteen chapters instead of three parts with each seven to nine chapters. Max Payne 3 is also way more linear than its predecessors. This seems like it has less content, but Max Payne 3 is the longest of the bunch, which will take the average gamer around thirteen hours to complete.
Next to the story mode, Max Payne 3 has a surprisingly fun multiplayer mode. You can create your own character to use in various different modes. Or if you bought the DLC, you can play fan favorites in the free for all deathmatch mode, like Vladimir Lem, Valerie Winterson, Vinnie Gognitti, Mona Sax and more. The game also has a multiplayer survival mode, called Dead Men Walking. In this co-op mode, you play as Max or Raul Passos, and must fend of waves of enemies, which can be very addictive and fun.
Max Payne 3 is a different kind of game than its predecessors. The gameplay is way more solid, and the change of setting may anger a lot of fans. But this change is very welcome in my opinion and works really well. The story has as in every Max Payne game a few twists and turns, which are still very well done. Many fans say that Max Payne 3 has gone away from its roots too much, but it's still a game about Max Payne, and it's still a very good game with a very interesting and dark story. 8/10
