I really liked this game, I will play it aqain and I recommend it to anyone who plays anything. It demonstrates good character and story, Level design and concepts, there are some lack -luster bits in there, like the collecting of 'gold' weapons which make your gun more powerful as well as how you have to connect online to play it, but they are worth overlooking for this frenzied frag fes This is Max Payne melded into the new ages of games like Gears of War etc( the dynamics of combat(I have not played Gears of war, but the hiding behind cover is central to this game an I beleive it was a good decision too, it works.. to some extent)
Game is VERY challegning -a testaemnt to 'REAL' games, unlike games like Bioshock infinte amongst other newer games which are a walkthrough.... If you dont like challenging games, then I suggest you try at it - it is innately rewarding and I beleive some of the easier games are actually led by you own happiness at success rather than it being a good game, hence I reinforce my tatement that this can deal out punishment but still keep you interested... There is so much that is in this game that a gamer, let alone a story driven gamer or FPS freak cant ignore!
Adding to the story, Max goes through a 'tranistion' where he changes and his environments change... I will say no more, this is hard to do in a game or story without each side of the game feeling 'detached' I think... These guys did a wonderful job, and whats more the level design is compliments it.
The game's story structure is not linear either, it shows parts of Max's life after Max Payne 2 (which is sub-standard to this) and it jumps about, but does not make it hard to follow... In a way, you could easily forget about the story and just FRAG!
On story matters: the commentary is in a more gloomey and Gritty, but still just as 'Romantic' (I mean reflective and thoughtful and intersting , NOT 'in-love') in a Max Payne kind of way. It does kind of hold true to the original, but changes it slightly and as Max Payne is an old-boy now, that makes sense. However, it can be a bit depressing as a result... But the end does kind of feel more 'uplifting' or balancing in contrast, so even better reason for you to complete it I think!
Level design is wonderful... It almsot feels like most parts of the level have been given a good amount of attention to challenege the player (unlike Alan Wake whcih has poor and dull level design(in my oppinion)... There are some parts of the game, just like Max Payne 1, that are iconic and VERY memorable... Some are just SO epic, it is to be played to be seen... and perhaps this is one of the best thigns that goes for it...
The levels vary from big multi layered slums to large elaborate, open Buldings.. Each work really well and it is a pleasure to not only be challenged with finding different strategies to fight, but also to see how Rockstar's Developers and Level designers can make a level to make the expereince feel different.
As for the art side... Eveything looks ok... my machine is not great and I had it on low settings, so please dont think it looks awful... maybe the shine came off through that... There are still a few extras likethe TV shows and various stuff to look at as with MaxPayne 1 and 2, so thats also a good plus, something that Alan Wake was also good for and perhaps did a better job of... But I consider this a better game in genreal (FPS).
The guns are good and it is an intersting kind of set up... For you Pyro players on TF, sorry, they're mostly ballistic weapons, so you will have to aim hard and rush in fighting or snipe with concentration.. this adds to the difficulty I think(AND REWARD! Dont be a Plank and skip the challenge!)... but lots of machine guns, pistols and sniper rifles... And a sign these guys are true to the FPS genre in general, at the end you are given a pretty nice Battle rifle (a sniper rifle without a scope which can be fired with accuracy)... I love these guns and feel the introduction only twice in the game , specifically at the end really was a nice addtion... As with the statisics on Rockstar - Socail club (which is nothing I want anything to do with...), you will notice there are more kills with dual single wield weapons than with big 2 handed weapons, I did not use them much and found at times they were quite ammo hungry... But they are excellent Assault weapons, but given their strngth it is interesting to find once you do dual weild, you cnnot carry a bigger weapon( so when your ammo rusn out , your left with nothing... a nice dynamic given they are so powerful... Plan your assault well!
I will add - I played this on Hard, did not play noraml, so maybe easy and normal are more reasonable... in saying that I am not the best gamer and the third person perspective (HUD) can be annoying at times and get you killed, so it may take some getting used to , but this is Max Payne and good on the Dev's and Rockstar for keeping this true. Also this is differnt to most FPS, by feel and application! There needs to be some variation! There are enpough standard FPS games out there, so even better reason to play this...
The problem with Max Payne 3 is - that it is gltichey - I get CTD or Crash to Desktop all the time, - often it is not an issue whilst playing and can play for many hours without any issues, the problem is when you open the menu (eacape) and leave it or leave the game idle ... it will crash and it can be tricky getting the game to close.. (lots of alt-tabbing - annoying)
Also as I mentioned Rockstar 'Social club' (which is a proper-chavvy name if you ask me:P) is a requirement to play. I hate this method of authenticating and even then, Rockstart have made it a standard that you MUST be connected to them before playing ... THUMBS DOWN ROCKSTAR!(I dont care how intersting statistics are), its not right!
Additionally the Golden waeapon thing and some of the clues are quite hard to find and is borigng. Perhaps they could have made more obvious level design... or perhaps I should play it again and is a good reason therefore to incite extra play to fans... In case you ask, I hate walkthroughs - they are for the braindead if you ask me... why ask when you can work it out yourself... gain-something from it...
Finally my last annoying point is cover shooting.... I played this on hard, so cover shooting for longer than 4 seconds will get you shot easily and more than likely make you use a pill to heal... so I will have to say Rockstar DID NOT play test and calibrate this enough... Or maybe I am missing something, it feels like you cannot aim or prepare before hand, the function of cover shooting is 'different' and dis-orientating in relation to 'freeshooting' if I could have a starndard FPS PoV (Point of View) then I would... and it would make this game easier... In saying that , it is something you can get used to and the dyanamic makes the game more intersting.... Additionally to that, some of the reticles are Horrendous! The pistol reticles are a DOT, and sometimes it can be close to impossible to find it without moving around and looking for it (especially wehn you need to coutner a Critical hit from an enemy) and when going to cover shooting... Laser sights are even worse... I even gave up using them and just hack-shooted ( trying to shoot without reticle/sight), which in a way is a good skill to develop.
This is an excellent gaming experience, the story is good, the action is INTENSE and multilayered and content here is decent, including and most probably level and event design
FYI - I never played Multiplayer and just played single player - that is enough for me after a day working or studying, though I would be keen to try multiplayuer just to try it out...
