On sale, this game is worth buying.
Its not a bad game, but its not a good game either. I had to force myself to play it long enough just to finish the story. Too much of the game play is repetitive. Rather than keeping you moving forward in the game, the game throws waves of enemies at you instead, keeping you ducking behind cover, rather than running and gunning.
The controls arent very smooth either. Especially the movement/diving controls. You will find yourself getting frustrated at max while you try to get him to do one thing, and he either doesnt respond well, or ends up doing something else. Glitchy things like diving towards and object and the game warping you to the top of the object can happen too. Most of the time when you die, it will be to something absolutely ridiculous and make you go "what the hell???". Other dumb things like headshotting an enemy, watching his body ragdoll to the ground, only to 3 seconds later get up and start shooting you again, will leave you baffled and having to shoot every body that falls the ground a second time just to be certain.
As far as this being a "max payne" game, well... its maybe 50% a max payne game. Sure, it has the bullet time, and the crazy shooting while flying through the air, but Rockstar, in all their creative genious, took too much of what made max payne, max payne... out of the game. No more comic slides for cut scenes, instead replaced by wannabe "Man on fire" cienematic effects that are just annoying. The look and feel of both max, and the settings, just doesnt feel like a max payne game 80% of the game. It feels more like a hybrid GTA game with max payne in it, than a max payne game.
If you are looking for a Max payne 1 or 2 experience... this game wont scratch that itch. At most, it will make you simply remember how good the first 2 games were and give you a desire to go back and play those games.
