Why does my game keep pausing?
Hello ladies & gentlemen. I just bought Max Payne 3 last night, and installed it. I am trying to play the single player story, but the game just keeps pausing every 2-5 seconds. What can be causing this? I cannot play this way.

Here is my GPU Info - http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/details.php?id=55ep9

Try lowering some settings. I would start by turning off MSAA since it can cause troubles when combined with FXAA as I heard.

Turn on steam overlay FPS counter(while in-game shift+tab ->settings...) and watch if the fps is dropping every time your game pauses(even a frame is enough).

I think I am misunderstanding something... all that shift tab does is bring up some steam menus and options, It doesn't bring up FPS anywhere.

what sort of devices do you have plugged into your computer? such as gamepads?

absolutely none. I just have my mouse.
It might be your mouse ,whenever my mouse disconnects it automatically pauses the game.

Yes, then you need to click on settings. Just google how to turn on fps counter in settings.

AHA!! I got it. And I monitored it, it stays the same during game play and during the pausing phase, about 36-38 fps.
I guess I just wasted my money on the game.

Well that's not the same. Fps is not constant. It varies between 36 and 38. Tell me if fps drops to 36 when game pauses. Also I would suggest lowering textures a bit.

Will ask the same question like him? Is it stuttering or freezing? I mean is fps dropping even a frame when that happens?

Wait, does your game goes to menu when that happens or what?

This used to happen to me seemingly at random. I could go for hours without having it, then something would trigger it. Whenever it did I alt-tabbed to desktop and alt-tabbed back to the game. It didn't fix it permanently, but it seemed to make the game playable again for a while.

Here's Rockstar's official support page for this problem: https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200152866-Pausing-to-the-Pause-screen-randomly-in-Max-Payne-3-for-PC
