Landing in the dark

Hi!
I wanted to try those job missions of carrying cargo around so I bought the C-46.
All the missions I've tried so far happen during the night time and most of landing spots are in the middle of nowhere without any kind of light signs. This plane apparently does not have a cockpit view so there are no instruments. There is no map either, as the option is locked.

I've been playing with the zoom on the above view so I can try to figure out where and in which direction the landing strip is.

Any advise on how to do it better?

You can hold 'R' on your keyboard and it will turn the camera to 'look at' your next waypoint.

That turns my head towards the waypoint but doesn't tell me the direction of the runway.

Yeah pressing R doesn't show you the direction of the runway, but it will still guide you to the correct place. I usually just do a low flyover and align myself with the runway. Then fly out a bit, turn 180 degrees and land.

Would be nice if they just put the runway heading in the job description or something...

Ideally you would want to maule or cub for cargo missions to the remote airstrips. The C-46 isn't very agile and needs a long strip i.e. one of the intl airports for ideal landing conditions

The only way to know "in game" what the directions of the runways will be, is to check the destination runways on the map, before you take the job. Obviously, if there's some sort of wind, the game will recommend the runway where it's a full or partial headwind. If there's no wind, then try using the "cockpit view" and zooming in on the destination marker to see which way the runway goes. If you still can't see it, try adjusting the brightness on your monitor.

Why are you flying at night if you don't want to? Set your flight conditions to daytime before you start your job. (under free flight)

It's not impossible that he's tagging clandestine missions for this instead of, you know, running pigs from one place to another. Those are ALWAYS at night. And almost ALWAYS to unlit airfields. It's part the price one has to deal with for those special badges...

Other tools that are useful for these kind of things (in general at least) are vfrmap.com which gives you pretty much every "real" airport, and airnav.com which has detailed information about every registered airstrip, seaplane port, airport, helicopter pad etc that the FAA knows about., and will tell you information about runways, how far they are and in what direction from nearby cities. So you can learn that (for example) Upper Paauau is a gravel strip 1965 x 40 ft that runs NW/SE, and it's three miles NW of the town of Pahala. So, if you're 3 miles from your destination and heading NW over a city at 3000 ft, you're almost dead lined up with the runway.

You can find clandestine cargo jobs during the day as well, but you'll miss out on a sizeable night flying bonus.
