Oculus Rift Support
I know I'm not the first to suggest it, but it seems like Dear Esther and the Oculus Rift are a match made in heaven. Since this game is built on Source, and Valve is an O.R. supporter, it stands to reason that O.R. integration wouldn't be too hard (as soon as Valve releases some kind of SDK). Any word on if the creators of Dear Esther are planning to integrate O.R.?

I haven't heard anything to confirm this, but it's a wonderful idea!

What is Oculus Rift?

Oculus Rift is a helmet you wear in game witch includs a screen providing a really wide range vision. Moreover when you move your head the camera in game move too.
Long story short, an awesome VR device.

Apparently Vireio (http://vire.io/), a custom driver, will allow you to play Dear Esther and a few other games using the Oculus Rift.

What it does is it uses a DLL proxy that replaces the real DirectX. It's not a "drop and play" solution though and you need to make some adjustments in the game's code to make it work (however Dear Esther is already listed as a supported game).

Any one know how to fix the dynamic shadows drifting when you roll your head? This would improve things greatly

I have been playing Dear Ester with the rift and surround headphones and its jawdropping. I dont really mind the odd shadows from tilting your head. The perception drivers are very easy to use. Id suggest everyone that has a rift to give it a try!

I can't wait to try it out on my Rift when it finally arrives. What's that shadow problem you've mentioned?
EXE 16. apr. 2013 kl. 16:53
Yup, Dear Esther would be a perfect game for the Rift.

I'm still waiting for my Rift, but at the 7:50 mark this guy shows the shadow issue, I'm sure i'll love it anyway but I was thinkin if Team Fortress 2 is the same engine and works shadow wise then was I was hoping it could be as simple as some console commands. Here's to hoping could be that simple. :)

It would be great if the developers could natively port the game for the Oculus Rift like Valve did with Half Life 2: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-05-11-half-life-2-gets-official-oculus-rift-support

This and Mirror's Edge were literally the first two games to come up in my mind thinking they're a perfect fit for the device.

Anyone heard anything from the developers about it?

I just bought Dear Esther and tried it with the Vireio drivers today. After having played demos with native support for Oculus SDK, using the Vireio headtracking and 3d effect was a major step back. I can see the potential. It looks more beautiful inside the Rift than on my monitor, but I just can't hold out longer than 5 minutes like this.

Really hoping they enable the VR mode for Dear Ester like Half-Life 2 and TF2 have done. I'm sure the developers will have to wait until the Source SDK is out, but if the developers can do it themselves that would be great.

Now I am waiting to play Dear Esther with the Oculus Rift so sooner rather than later ;-)

Yeah, the simulation drivers aren't quite the same as native support.

Hoping for this too since I imagine this to be the perfect experience for the Rift, being mostly about walking around and exploring with almost nil gameplay.

I havaen't tried rift yet but this was going through my mind from the first moment. Oculus rift would make magic with this.

I'll add another vote for Rift support! (Mac OS X especially, in my case.) It might even boost Dear Esther sales, with demand for VR content suddenly growing, and Dear Esther having such a well-crafted environment that others won't easily approach. Dear Esther could easily become THE must-have VR experience to show off the Rift to even non-gamer audiences.
