Holding W: The Game!
All you do is hold W. This game is very dull! If I wanted a good story, I'd watch a freakin' movie.

Look around a bit and take in the surroudings, or maybe indulge yourself in the story. I know you couldve watched a movie to get the same story, but because of the unique way the story was told, it coulda only be done in a simple hold W game.

I thknk the story and atmosphere blend very well. I like it, but I do understand when people don't, due to the complete lack of gameplay.

This is art. No suprise, that there a haters. But you are WAY more in the story, when you are IN it, on this island, it surrounds you. Only really great movies can do this.

How funny, most FPS games these days are little more than holding W. Moving forward is the point of most games...if you want to get really conceptual about it. Most interactive entertainment is nothing but flashing lights and sounds and moving forward.

When I saw this game, I went.
"Oh, OK, I might as well get an Indie game for once with my purchase."
I was wrong.
The genre is misleading.

I'm not convinced there's any real difference between playing Dear Esther and just watching somebody's youtube play through. Then again, one of the two options does cost money.

Most FPS games actually require you to shoot people which is gameplay you idiot. Any game with movement is holding w, that's not the point.

Dear Esther is a wonderful piece of art, that should not be on Steam marketed as a game. You can't even explore properly in this game because it doesn't let you go somewhere that you can physically see and SHOULD be able to get to.

That's not true. Just because a story is unique doesn't mean there's only one way to tell it. There could be a myriad of ways to tell it, but the developers went for the one with the least interactivity. Which, given that it's being marketed as a game, is not really the best option. If a game wants to lead you along a set path, that's fine. Many games do it. But you can still give the player some control instead of having a strict path. And before anyone brings it up, yes, I know games like COD do the same thing and I'm not advocating games like that in my statement.

Here's the problem the games story was crap. Lets review why.

1. Media. Telling a story is most influenced by the media that you use to tell it. If you are telling a story say by talking to a person you convey that story differently than say had you wrote it, or drawn it, or made a movie out of it, or even by turning the story into a game. By not utilizing the media to covey the story you fail step one of telling a story.

Games in particular tell stories through the use of high levels of observer participation. IE Gameplay. This game lacks almost all forms of gameplay thus doesn't utilize the media form very well.

2. The actual Story

Dear Esther story was kind of meh, not because I didn't get it, but specifically because it didn't pull on any human emotions. There was no fear, no love, no compassion, no anger it was almost devoid of any emotional attachment. Thus the game failed to grip its audience.


Dear Ester is neither a good story nor a good game thus I fail to see how any one can defend it on both counts.

If you want an example of this idea a moving story told through the media of a game then look no further than Journey.

Journey had engaging gameplay and made the player feel as if they were on a JOURNEY. It utilized the game to tell the story and did so well.

The story it self was amazing. It was quite simple in truth but it tugged on all facets of human emotions that it took something that was very simple and catapulted it into what all games and story telling in general should do.
