This is the most expansive, detail-packed, medieval ruler sim on the face of this planet Earth. The learning curve is pretty steep stepping into it, but it's pretty easy to play after that.
Every empire, ever kingdom, every duchy, every county, every holding all have their own leaders, council, and court with their own skills, desires, traits, and families from Iceland to India. All moving, plotting, working in exactly the way you would expect for the time period. Famous households from 760 to 1400 exist with historically accurate family trees (with flexibility for random and your own personal events and influence). Some of these family trees go back to the year 100 with links to their Wikipedia pages if you don't believe them.
The game recognizes established history: The rise and fall of nations, the typical expansion path of kingdoms. For the most part, things happen as you know them to happen, but does not bind the world to it.
Could Byzantium survive forever? Yes!
Could the Abbasids take over the whole of Europe? Yes!
Could you bring Hinduism to Rome? Yes!
Most importantly, you do not have to be the player of these civilizations for this to happen; crazy ♥♥♥♥ happens on its own. But maybe you do! Maybe you've been playing as Norway but something really interesting is happening in Spain. Simply return to the main menu, load the game but play as Spain instead and make a new save (You might not do too well since the object is to amass the highest score and you've just spent the last 300 years on another family's legacy, but the option is there)
Between this dynamic of familiar but unique and unpredictable history and the fact that you CAN choose to be any one of the empires/kingdoms/duchies/counties in order to edit history or forge a new one, I don't see there being a limit to replay content in a human lifetime.
And then there are mods...
I wouldn't call this game "fun" per se. It's a very specific kind of fun and I don't think this game is for everyone. If you want an exciting bout of Age of Mythology style nation empire building and combat, then no - this game is not for you. But if you enjoy deep history and watching feudal age politics and the implications they create, this is awesome.
