I'm leaving this review in the negative section, for two reasons. One, people who are on the fence about the game will check the negative section, and two, the actual negative section doesn't have a lot of well written reviews.
Okay, so after reading both sections of reviews, I've noticed one constant complaint. DLC. There are literally a TON of DLC for this game. And, of course, those DLC cost money, and with all of them piled up, you could buy a whole other game. However, for those of you who don't have the cash, most of the DLCs don't matter. Sure, way of life, get a dog or whatever, but a lot of the core gameplay features are offered in the core game.
DLC that don't offer gameplay features, such as the dynasty shields, the ruler pictures, the troop models, etc, are literally purely aesthetic. If you own them or not, they aren't going to help you or hinder you in gameplay. Wondering why there are cheap cosmetic DLC is like wondering why people buy hats and guns in TF2, or skins in CSGO. It really doesn't do anything, but if you want it, you can have it.
Now there are a few DLC that do change the game- such as the ones that let you control other rulers than the stock game. Most of them are cheap, and to be honest, those other rulers aren't even fun.
Let's talk about gameplay, you know, why most people play games. In CK2, the gameplay is different from other RTS or grand strategy games you might have played before. The gameplay isn't designed around combat, believe it or not. While combat is a big chunk of the game, CK2 differs from EU4 in the form that CK2 focuses on story and politics. You'll see more of the fleshed out effects of the war and the politics that follow the war. If you've ever watched John Green's "Crash Course" world history series, he mainly focuses not on the events of the battle, but of the effects of it.
That being said, it takes your entire lifetime to clear the dirt from your toenails in this game. If you don't have patience, this game probably isn't for you.
However, for history buffs like me, I love the game. I have a lot more time registered offline. So uh, without filling up paragraphs, I'll give you a short hand.
+Really nice event system
+Global politics are amazing
+The religion system can make for great gameplay
+Marry your infant daughter to a 60 year old man
+Have a gay relationship with the pope
+Feel amazing once a plot is successful
-Takes a long time to achieve things
-Sometimes AI can be ridiculous
-2 year old assassins
In summary, even though I would recommend everybody who sounds interested to buy this game, I don't think I'd buy it full price. Wait till the game goes on sale, and then buy it through a 3rd party supplier. For the people who don't know how this works-
Game goes on sale for 15$
Third party dealer buys the game en masse, sells copies and keys for 5-8$
A good website for that kind of stuff is "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥"
