Cultural units
Is it just my experience or do the cultural buildings/units pretty much suck? I haven't seen them all but they seem to generally cost way more than a simple barracks or stables upgrade and they only provide a miniscule increase in military power over the same. What would be the point of building these?

if your empire/kingdom is big, it doesnt matter what emperor/king builds at all... ;)

I love the greek culture unit heavy calvery and horse archers good against all but uses 1.6k ret size for 500 men. I seen a stack of 10k of them beat 14k stack of the adverage levie ai uses with hardy any losess.

The English and Welsh Longbow is pretty amazing as they barely cost anything and are very powerful.
Any Tengri rulers with HA/LC are pretty good as well.
So are the old cataphracts.
But others are bit rubbish.

Yes if the wiki is correct Longbows look good. So do Housecarls (good melee anyways) and Altaic/Persian riding grounds (decent balance and good pursuit ability). I'm not seeing it for cataphracts, they look far too expensive for what you get - sounds like maybe there was an older version that was better.

It's too bad, it would give the game some extra flavor if picking a culture gave you tactically helpful unique units a la Civ 4.

Housecarls are a bit limited to the melee phase.
Remember with the Tengri religion rulers get a 15% bonus to LC so more powerful than they intially appear.

I think they may have increased the cost of the cataphract retinue as I am sure I used to get many more.

i think he was talking about special buildings, not retinues.. ;) i might be wrong though.

Well I meant the cost of the building in money+time vs the power of the unit it gives. Forgot that about the religion! Hm, I wonder if there are other situational tweaks that make some of these units more powerful than they appear on paper? Tactics aren't a huge part of this game but that would be pretty cool. The extra boost to LC would definitely make a difference!

Maybe I'm min/maxing too much. That's probably not how you're supposed to play, I just like seeing what one can do.

theres a difference between the cultural buildings and units, cultural buildings add to the holdings levy with certian unit types, cultural retinues on the other hand are not related to those buildings, other than the fact that cultural retinues have a passive boost equal to the max cultural buildings effect on the holdings levy, so cultural retinues are almost always stronger than levy.
