Trying to vassalize a mercanary band
So, I'm playing as the Alan king of Alania (obviously) and there is a merc group called the Alan Riders. Now since we are both Alan, I won't get that "foreign culture" modifier when trying to vassalize, so if I give him a barony that's de jure Alania, he should accept right? I've tried to vassalize merc groups before, but no such luck by the way.

I dont think its possible to vassalize ANY merc group. You can give them land sure and theyll expand but they wont fall under anyone.
Theyll be indep.

I've never tried to give lands to mercs, I didn't know it was an option and I played 200+ hours XD

You can vassalise merc groups or at least you used to be able to.
They must be a de jure vassal with the correct culture and you must be a king or higher.

As muslims or pagans when you use invade cb you vasselize everything except the leader so if merc band is vassel of his it should become yours provided if they own land in the target zone.
I managed the vasslize orothdox pope this way. I even let the pope keep his church since he no threat

So... were you able to convert him?

you cant convert faith heads. I couldnt get catholic pope my vassel since ai has trouble forming empire of italy and making anti pope to vassel pope.

Well, the logic that I'm basing you can vassalize merc bands is that Jerusalem has both the Templars and the Knights Hospitallier vassalized if you start at the 3rd Crusade marker, so it must be possible. Another way I know you can is if you lose an invasion to a merc group, and retake the realm, if the merc group has any land de jure that realm then they become your vassal. I just have never been able to do it through this method and didn't want to give away a barony for no reward. However I don't get the stipulations for giving land to non-vassals. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. I'll keep trying to figure this out. EDIT: I also remember being able to offer it in earlier versions of the game like an earlier comment stated.

Holy Orders =/= Merc Bands. Although I'm not sure about the mercenary band thing, if you don't pay them - maybe you can vassalize them then. But all holy orders can be vassalized, they just need a holding. For some reason, though, the Teutonic Knights have no holdings and no army in my game, and I can't hire them. Makes no sense, so I, at the very least, gave them land in my realm (although they're independent).

If you start after 1099 and later Jerusalem gets the Hospitalliers as vassals.

Sometimes the leader of a band will inherit a barony and you can vassalise them.

Hospitallers are not a mercenary band, they are a holy order, AFAIK there's a difference, lol.

Sadly, no you can't vassalize a mercenery band. You can only do that with the Holy Orders. In order to vassalize you need to grant them land; you can with holy orders, but cannot with mercenary bands.

As cannot any more? I have done in the past....

I had it accidentally happen, too. I used the Scottish mercenaries in conquering the duchy of Aragon, didn't have enough ready cash, and they went and conquered Catalonia. When I finally conquered the Catalan duchy, I had the option to hire the Scots for around 10g each hire, with a vastly reduced monthly charge for their services.

I wasn't aware you could ever vassilize mercenary bands. Either way, no you cannot grant them land. However, if somehow they get territory, you become their de jure duke, and are either an emperor or have the same culture, it could possibly still work. Though, I have never seen it happen in any of my playthroughs.
