Europa is to Crusader Kings as Simcity is the The Sims. It's just preference.

If you like medieval times, making plots and manage vassals etc then CKII. EU4 is more on managing nation as a whole and seems more complicated or maybe its just me...

Two different beasts.
EU4 is more about playing the great game of conquest and dominance, while CK2 is more focused on roleplaying and living the history.

Try both demos, see which gameplay most intrigues you, and then buy the game closer to you expectations and desires.

CKII = dynastic simulation so the game is based largely around you controlling a family and your nations are guided by shaping them. (There's not really anything like it that I've ever played). Example: You could kill your 14 year old wife for sleeping with her uncle and inherit half of europe as a result.

EUIV = nation simulation so the game is based around you playing as a nation and getting it in and out of trouble, expanding it, etc. (I'd compare it a lot to Civilization with 10x more meat to it). Example: You have to have a reason to go to war with someone, so you send a spy in to create a claim and take a region out, or insult them so maybe they attack you.

In my opinion, CK2 hands down. Besides having been out for longer and being more refined I just get bored with EU4 pretty quickly, which is a shame because EU3 got me into Paradox grand strategy games.

EU4 really isn't that complicated once you get the basics of the new trade system and power points down. The game tells you what your opinion of other countries is, which limits your foreign policy avenues -- so not much to figure out there. There's a bit more randomness involved in EU's battles than CK2s too.

There is but it's different stuff. It's more economical like putting more buildings in your province and I find the peacetime relations are a lot more detailed. There's just as much to "manage" per say but it's not about specific people like CKII is.

As someone who preordered EU4 and only received CK2 as a bonus I have to say CK2. I'm actually happier with my preorder bonus that I am with my preordered game! lol!

Not that EU4 is bad by any stretch of the imagination I simply prefer CK2 by, right now, a long shot. CK2 is a lot more personal. Personal characters, family, dynasty and politics. Ahhh the politics. I absolutely love all the systems in CK2 and because everything is personal, and not national, you're a lot more connected and invested I feel. The stories that happen have a lot more umpth behind them not because "southern Ireland is revolting" but "my bastid of a cousin is making a claim on my throne and happens to have his uncle and Earl Jimmy on his side!! >:o I knew I should've had my dad smother him in bed!"

Both are excellent choices in the end, I just prefer the personal touch of CK2

I am so into CK2 as well. As minusthedrifter stated it feels very more personal as you try to strive for personal power and to advance the Kingdom for your children (or at least one of them, the other bastages will probably plot to have you removed on succession :P). It is so much fun and I am completely hooked. I have not yet played EU4 so I am sorry to say I can not give you a good comparison, and I am sure it's a great game as well, but playing CK2 I just have no real urge to move on at the moment.
